Job summary

Rowan College at Burlington County is seeking an Assistant Lead Groundskeeper to support the Lead Groundskeeper in maintaining college grounds and hard surface areas. This Support Staff Union position requires coordination of grounds staff, seasonal turf tasks, and operational safety, with licenses and CDL responsibilities as noted.

Education includes a high school diploma and NJ pesticide/fertilizer licensing with CDL B; supervisory experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• NJ Commercial Pesticide Applicator License CORE, 3A, 3B (or ability to obtain within 1 year).
• NJ Fertilizer License-preferred (or ability to obtain within 90 days).
• CDL Class B with air brakes (or ability to obtain within 1 year).
• Two years landscaping or grounds maintenance supervisory experience.
• Working knowledge of small engine/equipment repair.
• Microsoft Office proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Assist with planning and coordination of grounds care activities including supervision and work assignments.
• Coordinate maintenance of grounds and roadways, seasonal turf maintenance.
• Planting, transplanting, feeding and pruning of trees and shrubs.
• Clear wooded areas by thinning with power and hand tools.
• Patching roadways, installing street signs, and managing parking areas.
• Remove snow and apply deicing products for safe conditions.
• Maintain nature trails free of hazards; assist with turf and ornamental applications.
• Install and maintain drainage and sewage systems per standards.
• Train employees on safety procedures and equipment operation.
• Oversee the vehicle fleet; ensure tools and equipment are maintained.

Job description

Under supervision of the Lead Groundskeeper, the Assistant Lead Groundskeeper is to perform duties necessary to maintain grounds and hard surface infrastructure in a manner acceptable to the college.

This is a Support Staff Union position as stated in the Support Staff collective bargaining agreement Grade Level C.

• Assists with the planning and coordination of all grounds care activities including the supervision, work assignments of groundskeepers, part-time and temporary project workers.
• Assists with the coordination of grounds maintenance and roadways, including the following:
• Seasonal turf maintenance including: fertilizer and pesticide treatments, mowing, seeding, trimming, and edging.
• Routine care including: planting, transplanting, feeding and pruning of trees and shrubs.
• Clearing of wooded areas by selective thinning with power and hand tools.
• Patching roadways, installing street signs, working roadways and parking areas.
• Removal and relocating of snow and applying deicing products to create safe conditions for students and staff.
• Maintaining nature trails to ensure trails are free of poisonous plants, debris, and other safety hazards.
• Assist with maintaining and documenting turf and ornamental applications.
• Install and maintain drainage and sewage systems according to college standards.
• Train employees on safety procedures, equipment operation, and best practices of ground maintenance.
• Assist with overseeing the vehicle fleet.
• Ensures tools and equipment are maintained and kept in a clean and serviceable condition.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

OVERALL PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY:

Education Required:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• NJ Commercial Pesticide Applicator License: CORE, 3A, 3B (or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment).

Experience Required:

• Two (2) years landscaping or grounds maintenance supervisory experience.

Skills/Abilities /Knowledge /Other Requirements

• Knowledge in the use and maintenance of manual and power equipment including, but not limited to: zero turn mowers, chippers, string trimmers, snow blowers, chainsaws and hedge trimmers.
• Operate heavy equipment including but not limited to: skid steers, front end loaders and tractors.
• Microsoft Office proficiency

INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS:

Collaborates with department members and/or the Compliance, Assessment and Research team to support planning, assessment, data collection and reporting for continuous improvement of the college.
