Overview

JOB SUMMARY Laboratory Assistants/Phlebotomists are non-professional personnel trained in areas of the clinical laboratory essential for the overall efficiency and smooth operation of the laboratory. These areas include: phlebotomy, preparation of send-out tests, answering telephones, and assisting in chemistry, hematology, and microbiology departments. The purpose of this job description is to outline how this valuable assistance can be provided. To qualify for this position, candidates must be able to work independently and meet all the requirements outlined for a Laboratory Assistant. The ideal candidate should be versatile across all laboratory aspects and a team player, capable of performing and coordinating duties to support the Clinical Laboratory Scientist, particularly in phlebotomy and processing, including send-out and microbiology set-ups. Proficiency in computer systems and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) is essential for managing and troubleshooting processing issues and billing. The candidate should also demonstrate competence in assisting with automated instruments and gaining the confidence of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
  • High school diploma or equivalent; an AA or Bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience as a phlebotomist.
  • Certification in venipuncture and skin puncture (CPT).
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • At least four years of experience in a clinical laboratory, including at least two years as a Laboratory Technician, Lead Laboratory Assistant, or Laboratory Assistant Supervisor, or equivalent experience.
  • At least two years of LIS experience and proficiency with computer systems.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Experience with automated chemistry, hematology, or microbiology instruments is preferred.
