Job summary

Overview

JOB SUMMARY: Laboratory Assistants/Phlebotomists are non-professional personnel trained in areas of the clinical laboratory that contribute to the overall efficiency and smooth operation of the laboratory. Responsibilities include phlebotomy, preparation of send-out tests, answering phones, and assisting in chemistry, hematology, and microbiology departments. The role requires the ability to work independently, be versatile across all laboratory aspects, and function effectively as part of a team to support the Clinical Laboratory Scientist. The assistant will help coordinate duties, manage send-out and microbiology setups, and demonstrate proficiency with computer systems and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) to troubleshoot processing and billing issues. The individual must also be capable of assisting with automated instrument operation and gaining the confidence of senior laboratory staff.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
  • High school diploma or equivalent; AA or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years' experience as a phlebotomist.
  • Certification in venipuncture and skin puncture (CPT).
  • Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • At least four years of experience in a clinical laboratory, including two years as a Laboratory Technician, Lead Laboratory Assistant, or Laboratory Assistant Supervisor, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and computer skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Experience with automated chemistry, hematology, or microbiology instruments.
