Job description

Job Title: Assistant Lecturer or Assistant Instructor

Institution: The School of Journalism at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, College of Mass Communication and Media Arts

Appointment Type: Term, non-tenure track

Date of Appointment: August 16, 2021

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teach undergraduate courses in areas such as newswriting (print and broadcast), news and/or sports reporting, producing, and/or investigative reporting.
  2. Work with student-produced news entities including The Daily Egyptian and River Region Evening Edition.
  3. Collaborate with the staff of WSIU Public Broadcasting Service.
  4. Participate in service, recruitment, and retention activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. For Assistant Lecturer: Master's degree in Journalism or a related field and tested professional experience as a multi-media journalist.
  2. For Assistant Instructor: Bachelor's Degree in Journalism or a related field and tested professional experience as a multi-media journalist.

Examples of Tested Professional Experience:

  1. 5 or more years at a top 30 news market organization as defined by Nielsen Digital Media Research.
  2. Receipt of regional or national awards.
  3. Evidence of effective prior teaching experience in a 4-year college setting.
  4. Expert experience as a consultant offering workshops and/or seminars.
  5. Expertise in areas such as sports, science, or other specialized subjects.

Preferred Qualifications:

More than ten years of experience as a multi-media journalist, with five or more years in a top 20 news market organization or with a national news agency.
