Job Description Summary

Positions in this classification take charge of housekeeping work in assigned areas related to the maintenance of cleanliness, control and distribution of linens and cleaning supplies and allocate and distribute the work and assists in the training of staff assigned to delegated areas.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Building Services Manager.

Work Performed

Allocates, distributes and supervises the work of Housekeepers and Service Workers assigned to the delegated areas; speaks to employees when work does not meet standards and reports performance issues to management; and delivers hands-on orientation and training in equipment and product usage.

Determines work requirements by checking online booking / vacancy statistics and assigning work as required to address vacancies and upcoming room bookings.

Ensures master key sets are kept secured; provides room access as required using master keys.

Performs regular inspections of areas serviced to ensure an appropriate standard of cleanliness is maintained and that work is performed in accordance with established requirements for a given area. Thoroughly documents any incidents involving significant damage to property and provides information to manager for assessment purposes.

Performs regular inspections of housekeeping and other cleaning equipment to ensure equipment is being properly maintained; reports any deficiencies to the manager.

Checks and reports inventory requirements of housekeeping and linen supplies and ensures that housekeeping equipment is maintained and repaired as necessary.

Determines required quantities and prepares orders for paper products / cleaning chemicals / other supplies and submits to manager bi- weekly.

Ensures that employees under his/her jurisdiction work in a correct and safe manner & in accordance with all normal safety standards and practices and university and departmental policies and procedures

Performs housekeeping duties as required.

Relieves or assists other Assistant Housekeeping Supervisors as assigned.

Oversees and coordinates special housekeeping project work, such as floor care, carpet cleaning, or other cleaning projects as assigned.

Records and stores lost and found items as per established procedures.

Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Makes decisions regarding the coordination and allocation of housekeeping and service worker staff and acceptability of work performed; inappropriate decisions may result in poor customer service and loss of revenue. Has access to master key sets; failure to adequately secure these key sets could result in significant security and financial risks for the department and residents.

Supervision Received

Works under general supervision. Reports to the Building Services Manager.

Supervision Given

Allocates, trains and monitors the work of Housekeepers and Service Workers.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a technical college or institute.1 year relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Building Services Worker Certificate preferred. Class 5 Drivers License preferred. Experience supervising in a Unionized environment preferred. Experience facilitating training sessions and orienting new employees on job tasks. Ability to operate computers at a basic level; familiarity with Microsoft Office software and ability to learn proprietary room booking software. Good verbal and written communication skills.
