Job summary

Assistant GIS Specialist for ESPO Corporation in Kansas City, MO, on a 12‑month contract. Supports development, maintenance, and analysis of GIS data for diverse client projects, delivering high-quality GIS products and timely communications with teams and clients.

Role involves data development, metadata creation, coordinate transformations, map creation, QA/QC, and collaboration across cross-functional teams to meet project objectives. Travel and background checks may apply.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Geomatics, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
  • GIS Professional (GISP) certification or an ESRI technical certification is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work independently while demonstrating accuracy, reliability, sound judgment, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment with demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Basic proficiency with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online (AGOL), and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience is preferred.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is strongly preferred.
  • A master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with GIS analysis, data development, data collection, and mapping for client projects while supporting both internal and external project teams.
  • Assist with GIS metadata creation, digital feature extraction, land survey record searches, and ownership data research from a variety of sources.
  • Assist with coordinate system projections and geospatial data transformations for project deliverables.
  • Assist in creating and updating GIS maps, map layers, and geospatial databases.
  • Assist with georeferencing raster and vector datasets.
  • Support ad-hoc analyses and provide recommendations to help achieve business goals related to quality, billability, and utilization.
  • Assist with quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of GIS deliverables to ensure compliance with client and project requirements.
  • Utilize software applications and information from various sources to develop GIS maps supporting field personnel and client deliverables.
  • Regularly communicate project status with project teams and clients to support successful project execution.
  • Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description:
Position Summary
The Assistant Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist supports the development, maintenance, analysis, and management of GIS data for a wide range of professional services. This role assists with GIS analysis, data development, data maintenance, and data preparation for use in GIS applications. A key responsibility of the position is providing excellent customer service by regularly communicating project status and collaborating with clients to ensure project objectives are met.

Working closely with cross-functional teams, the Assistant GIS Specialist delivers high-quality GIS data and services while demonstrating a strong commitment to teamwork, customer service, responsiveness, and continuous improvement.

Additional Requirements
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (Green Card holder). H-1B visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation, driving record review, and pre-employment drug screening is required.
  • Travel required: Approximately 5%.
  • Business travel expenses are reimbursable in accordance with company policy.
