Job summary

Wood Rodgers is seeking an Assistant Geologist to join our Reno geotechnical team. You will gain hands-on field and office experience under licensed PEs and PGs on Nevada and western US projects.

The role supports geotechnical investigations, engineering geology studies, mining-related programs, fault investigations, and related projects. Requires a geology-related degree and willingness to perform fieldwork in diverse conditions.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Geology or Earth Science with interest applying geologic principles to engineering projects.
  • Willingness to perform fieldwork in diverse conditions with safety and quality focus.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills to manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced setting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; works independently or in teams.
  • Experience with field investigations, logging, mapping, GIS, and geotechnical activities.
  • Pursuing GIT/EIT/PG licensure; strong work ethic and long-term career focus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist geotech and geology field investigations: borings, pits, mapping, site reconnaissance, hazard evals.
  • Collect and log soil/rock data using logs, photos, GPS, and digital tools.
  • Support geology studies, fault seismos, slope stability, and subsurface interpretation.
  • Coordinate lab testing and review data for site and infrastructure projects.
  • Prepare maps, cross-sections, logs, figures, and reports.
  • Collaborate with engineers and geologists on projects across transportation, water, civil, and land development.

Wood Rodgers, a leading engineering consulting firm, is seeking a motivated Assistant Geologist to join our growing geotechnical and geological team. This position offers the opportunity to work directly under experienced licensed Professional Engineers (PEs), Professional Geologists (PGs), and senior technical staff on a diverse range of projects throughout Nevada and the western United States. The candidate will gain hands‑on experience in both field and office settings while supporting geotechnical investigations, engineering geology studies, mining related geotechnical exploration programs, fault investigations, and other related projects.

This is a staffed, hourly, non-exempt position.

A day in the life as a Wood Rodgers' Assistant Geologist
  • Assist with geotechnical, geological, and mining-related field investigations, including exploratory borings, test pits, geologic mapping, site reconnaissance, and geologic hazard evaluations.
  • Collect, log, and document soil, rock, groundwater, and geologic data using field logs, photographs, GPS equipment, and digital data collection tools.
  • Support engineering geology studies, fault investigations, seismic hazard assessments, slope stability evaluations, and interpretation of subsurface conditions.
  • Coordinate laboratory testing, review geotechnical and geological data, and assist with technical analyses for site development, infrastructure, and resource projects.
  • Prepare maps, cross-sections, boring logs, figures, and technical documentation, and contribute to geotechnical engineering and engineering geology reports.
  • Collaborate with Professional Engineers, Professional Geologists, and multidisciplinary teams while supporting construction observation activities and projects across transportation, water resources, civil engineering, land development, and related disciplines.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Engineering Geology, Earth Science, or a related field, with a strong interest in applying geologic principles to engineering and infrastructure projects.
  • Ability and willingness to perform fieldwork in diverse weather, terrain, and site conditions while maintaining a strong commitment to safety and quality.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities in a fast‑paced consulting environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Experience or familiarity with field investigations, soil and rock logging, geologic mapping, GPS/GIS applications, geologic data management, construction observation, or related geotechnical, environmental, or mining activities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth, including pursuit of GIT, EIT, or PG licensure, coupled with a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and enthusiasm for a long‑term career in engineering geology and geotechnical consulting.

Offers will be based on several factors, including experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, training, and location.
