Job summary

Eplacement is seeking an experienced Assistant General Counsel – Reinsurance to join a fast-growing Series A reinsurance business in the United States. You will help build the contracts, processes and legal infrastructure the company needs as it scales, working directly with underwriting and leadership.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of reinsurance legal experience.
• Hands-on drafting and negotiating P&C reinsurance contracts.
• Deep understanding of treaty and/or facultative reinsurance.
• Experience building or improving legal processes and templates.
• US JD and bar admission in at least one US jurisdiction.

Responsibilities

• Draft, review and negotiate reinsurance agreements across treaty and facultative business.
• Work across quota share, excess of loss and other structures.
• Partner with underwriting and leadership on transactions from structuring through execution.
• Advise on key contractual provisions including coverage, exclusions, limits, aggregation, collateral, trusts, insolvency and claims provisions.
• Develop contract templates, clause libraries and legal processes.
• Support new products, structures and relationships across reinsurance.
• Collaborate with external counsel and regulators as needed.
• Support broader corporate, regulatory and compliance matters with General Counsel.
• Help shape the development of the legal function as the company grows.

Job description

We’re partnering with a fast-growing Series A business in the reinsurance market to hire an Assistant General Counsel – Reinsurance.

This is an opportunity to join a small, high-calibre team at an early stage of significant growth and play a key role in building the legal infrastructure behind a growing reinsurance business.

We’re looking for an experienced reinsurance lawyer who combines deep industry knowledge with a genuinely commercial and hands-on approach.

You won’t be joining a large legal department with established processes and layers of support. You’ll work closely with underwriting and leadership on live transactions, while helping build the contracts, processes and legal infrastructure the business needs as it scales.

The environment will suit someone who is comfortable with ambiguity, can make good decisions with imperfect information, and genuinely enjoys building.

What You’ll Do

• Draft, review and negotiate reinsurance agreements across treaty and facultative business.

• Partner closely with underwriting and leadership on transactions from structuring through execution.

• Work with external counsel and regulatory partners where required.
• Support broader corporate, regulatory and compliance matters alongside the General Counsel.
• Help shape how the legal function develops as the company grows.

What We’re Looking For

• 5+ years of meaningful legal experience within reinsurance.
• Strong hands-on experience drafting and negotiating P&C reinsurance contracts.
• Deep understanding of treaty and/or facultative reinsurance.
• Strong commercial judgment and the ability to work closely with underwriting and business teams.
• Experience building, implementing or improving legal processes, templates or infrastructure.
• Ideally, experience within a start-up, high-growth business, or another environment where you have had to build without significant existing infrastructure.
• Comfortable operating independently and remaining close to the detail.
• Curious, adaptable and excited by the opportunity to build something new.
• JD and admission to practise law in at least one US jurisdiction.
