Responsibilities
  • The Assistant General Counsel–Consumer Banking provides legal advice on consumer deposit and loan products and services, working closely with senior management to manage legal, regulatory, and reputational risks.
  • Offer expert legal guidance on laws and regulations affecting consumer banking, including Dodd-Frank, Federal Reserve, FDIC, OCC, CFPB, and other relevant laws.
  • Collaborate internally to assess risks and develop management strategies.
  • Support regulatory examinations and audits.
  • Advise on all stages of consumer banking products, from development to launch, covering marketing, disclosures, contractual negotiations, compliance, and operational aspects.
  • Help develop and evaluate consumer banking policies conforming to legal standards.
  • Provide legal support to protect the company's interests and perform additional assigned tasks.
The Duties of the Assistant General Counsel
  • Provide practical legal advice on federal, state, and local laws affecting the company.
  • Develop legal strategies to achieve business objectives and resolve complex issues.
  • Lead discussions on legal topics with stakeholders, including senior management.
  • Manage outside counsel to ensure quality and efficiency.
  • Conduct legal research and apply ethical judgment.
Organizational Relationship

The role reports to the General Counsel or an Associate General Counsel.

Qualifications

Education & Experience: At least 12 years of legal practice, with 5+ years in-house at a reputable bank. Must be licensed in VA, NC, NY, or eligible for reciprocity. JD degree and four-year undergraduate degree required.

Knowledge & Skills: Deep legal expertise, independent judgment, excellent communication, risk management, collaboration, and high ethical standards.
