Assistant General Counsel and Real Property Manager

Position Overview

This role serves as the University’s Real Property Manager, overseeing all real estate-related activities, including reporting, transactions, and property management. The position also provides legal advice on real estate matters.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Manage UNC Charlotte’s real property portfolio and coordinate reports with the UNC System Office and State Property Office.
  2. Chair the campus property review committee.
  3. Prepare materials for the Board of Trustees and coordinate approvals with the UNC System Office.
  4. Review, negotiate, and draft real estate documents and transactions.
  5. Oversee property management functions, including leases and coordination with Facilities Management.
  6. Maintain relationships with external brokers and manage leasing processes.
  7. Collaborate on property acquisition, surveys, environmental reports, and title policies.
  8. Manage legal documents for real estate projects and facilitate land and property discussions.
  9. Assist in establishing policies for real property acquisition and use.
  10. Maintain organized records of all real property matters.
  11. Advise senior administrators on legal and regulatory issues related to real estate.
  12. Participate in long-term planning for the university’s real estate assets.
  13. Lead special projects related to land and property matters.
Minimum Qualifications
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • At least one year of legal practice in real estate transactions, including drafting and negotiation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three or more years of relevant legal experience, especially with university or commercial real estate.
  • Experience managing property transactions and understanding of university policies.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and ethical standards.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Must have or obtain a North Carolina law license within one year of employment.
