Job summary

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership.
  • 5+ years of legal experience, preferably in energy, commodities, or commercial transactions.
  • Strong contract drafting and negotiation experience.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced commercial environment.

Responsibilities

  • Structure, negotiate, and implement complex retail electricity and natural gas commodity transactions.
  • Provide legal and strategic advice to commercial and business teams on energy products and transactions.
  • Draft and negotiate various agreements including master energy supply agreements and other transaction documents.
  • Identify, evaluate, and advise on legal, regulatory, and commercial risks of energy transactions.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel and manage budget and matter progression.

Job description

A leading energy solutions provider is seeking an experienced attorney to join its in-house legal team supporting complex retail electricity and natural gas transactions across North America. This organization is backed by one of the largest clean energy platforms in the country and offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of commercial strategy, energy markets, and the evolving energy transition.

This role will serve as a key legal advisor to commercial teams, leading the structuring, negotiation, and execution of sophisticated retail energy commodity transactions while partnering closely with business stakeholders on strategic initiatives.

Role Overview

This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney with retail energy experience who enjoys being close to the business and participating in high-value, commercially driven work. The position offers substantial responsibility, direct interaction with senior leadership, and exposure to a broad range of retail electricity and natural gas products and transactions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Structure, negotiate, and implement complex retail electricity and natural gas commodity transactions.
  • Provide legal and strategic advice to commercial and business teams regarding retail energy products and transactions.
  • Draft and negotiate a variety of agreements, including:
  • Master electricity and natural gas supply agreements
  • Energy transaction documents
  • Non-disclosure agreements
  • Marketing agreements
  • Broker agreements
  • Develop and negotiate customized product and transaction documentation based on commercial deal structures.
  • Identify, evaluate, and advise on legal, regulatory, and commercial risks associated with energy transactions.
  • Manage significant transactional matters with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Coordinate with and oversee outside counsel when needed, including budgeting and matter management.
  • Support additional strategic legal initiatives and commercial projects across the business.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of legal experience, preferably with a focus on energy, commodities, or commercial transactions.
  • Strong contract drafting and negotiation experience.

Preferred Experience

  • Direct experience handling retail electricity and/or natural gas transactions.
  • Experience negotiating and drafting:
  • Master energy supply agreements
  • Energy transaction documents
  • Commodity-related commercial contracts
  • NDAs and related transaction documentation
  • Experience partnering with commercial teams to structure and execute complex transactions.
  • Familiarity with SaaS agreements and technology-related commercial contracts.
  • Prior experience in-house with an energy company, energy marketer, utility, or a law firm serving the energy sector is highly desirable.
