Overview

The Assistant GAINS Program Director/Senior Group Leader will serve in a critical support role to the Corps Commanding Officers and a senior leadership role within the Brownsville Corps Complex.

Working directly under the supervision of the GAINS Program Director/Site Supervisor, the Assistant GAINS Program Director/Senior Group Leader will assist with the oversight of all programmatic aspects of the year-round Brownsville GAINS Program. The Assistant GAINS Program Director/Senior Group Leader will have direct responsibility for health & safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Involvement in the total program with willingness to help in all areas as needed, including food service, outdoor/indoor activities, children with problems, classroom coverage, etc.
  • Promote observance of the moral and ethical code affecting program participants and staff
  • Must be able to liaise with external (DYCD, OCFS, etc.) and off-site (DHQ) personnel, as necessary.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Understand, promote, and facilitate the Mission of The Salvation Army, at all times.
  • Ensure that all communications and concerns related to operation of the program are handled in accordance with the proper protocols for the Brownsville Corps Complex.
  • Work with the Brownsville Corps Complex staff to foster cooperative relationships, in meeting the holistic needs of the community.
  • Must attend and contribute to Complex Leadership Team Meetings.
  • Responsible for sharing with the Corps Commanding Officers all matters of mutual concern relating to the total welfare of the Program.
  • Under the direction of the Corps Officers, the Assistant Program Director will work with the Program Director to ensure that the program remains fiscally and administratively strong, sharing information constantly and meeting regularly.
  • Under the leadership of the Program Director, assume responsibility for the daily supervision and safety of all participants.
  • Assume leadership of the GAINS Program in the absence of the Program Director.
  • Responsible for directing programs related to Middle School students.
  • Plan and/or follow the daily activities scheduled for the participants.
  • Lead participants to and from all activity areas and field trips.
  • Teach and supervise organized games and activities.
  • Work with the Program Director & Director of Community Engagement to provide well-rounded job training opportunities for High School Students and Summer Youth Employment Program participants.
  • Interact with city and state agencies to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the daily schedule for the program.
  • Assist with matters related to the operation of the program.
  • Coordinate field trips and daily activities for all participants.
  • Help maintain and ensure that participants & staff records are up to date and readily available for inspections; make changes, discharges, and follow-ups as necessary.
  • Responsible for completing daily facility inspections and maintaining cleanliness.
  • Supervise all Group Leaders, Assistant Group Leaders & Program Aides.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree OR Associate Degree in child development, elementary education or related field OR two years of college with 18 credits in related field OR School-Age Child Care Credential with one year of supervisory experience.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; should possess qualities of heart, mind, and character applicable to all working intimately with people.
  • Experience in the Arts (Music, Drama, Dance, Poetry, etc.) is required.
