Description of Work

The Assistant Food Service Manager assists with the management and supervision of the overall operation of a university residence hall dining center.


In this role, you will:

  • Provide a safe and inviting atmosphere, healthful meal choices, and quality service in an environment that promotes community, growth, and education of our students, staff, faculty and guests.
  • Participate in menu planning, volume forecasting, and food and supplies purchasing for all meals and other food-related activities for students, staff, faculty guests and conference attendees.
  • Work with team leaders and management staff on development of menus.
  • Develop and communicate daily food production plans and responsibilities with the dining center team leaders and staff.
  • Assist with daily food production in all areas (preparation, serving, and cleanup as needed).
  • Plan special dining service events (within and outside the dining center). Includes menu planning, food production, staffing, decorations, set‑up, deliveries as needed, billings for events, and clean up.
  • Assist with the preparation of the dining center work schedules for regular and temporary staff.
  • Assist with the interviewing, hiring, scheduling, training and evaluations for student staff.
  • Control food and labor costs within budgeted and/or pre-established objectives. Evaluates and makes recommendations to stay within budget.

  • Food service management experience in a high-volume commercial or non-commercial dining service operation.
  • Knowledge of cost controls, inventory controls and food safety/sanitation programs necessary.
  • Must have ability to supervise large quantity food production. Knowledge of personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, e‑mail and internet necessary.
  • Food Handler’s permit or ability to obtain by passing the Safety and Sanitation test required.
Preferred Qualifications
