Christman Southeast Constructors (CSEC) seeks an Assistant Field Layout Engineer to support layout across the southeast region. The role involves establishing corners, laying out patterns, and performing precision surveys to ensure accurate alignment during concrete pours.

The candidate will read structural, architectural, and civil drawings, verify elevations, and assist in coordinating shop drawings. Strong surveying fundamentals and experience with layout instruments are required.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of construction trades experience.
• Certificate in surveying or equivalent training.
• Experience reading and coordinating drawings with field layout.
• Basic understanding of layout instruments and measurement techniques.

• Reads drawings to identify required dimensions and confirms no conflicts between drawing sets.
• Calculates earth, rock, and concrete quantities accurately.
• Coordinates shop drawings with contract drawings and assists in resolving discrepancies.
• Maintains calibration of engineering equipment and compiles project records.

Assistant Field Layout Engineer – Knoxville, TN

Christman Southeast Constructors (CSEC) is seeking an Assistant Field Layout Engineer to work across the southeast region.

Responsibilities

• Takes direction from supervisor (QC Manager, Field Layout Engineer).
• Establishes building corners and permanent reference points to allow back checks of building location.
• Lays out wall/column/anchor bolt pattern center lines for correct installation of rebar, formwork embeds, etc.
• Sets and maintains benchmarks and control lines on each floor for use in layout, and verifies that workers are using proper elevations and control lines.
• Checks slab for elevation and alignment during concrete pours.
• Performs as-built surveys to verify correct placement of work and identify conflicts between items of work (e.g., where concrete slab edge or walls have encroached on the exterior skin), and may help maintain as-built drawings.
• Reads drawings to identify required dimensions to perform layout and confirms no conflicts between drawing sets (Structural, Architectural, Civil, etc.).
• Calculates earth, rock, and concrete quantities accurately.
• Assists with coordination of shop drawings with contract drawings, verifies accuracy, and proposes solutions to discrepancies.
• Responsible for care, maintenance, and calibration of engineering equipment.
• Compiles and maintains project record and as-built documents.

Travel & Hours

Full-time position with occasional extended hours and weekends. Must have reliable transportation and be willing to travel up to 60 miles a day, depending on project location relative to residence. Majority of travel occurs during work hours; overnight stays may be required.

Required Qualifications

• Five (5) years of experience as a tradesperson in construction.
• Graduation from a relevant trade school with a certificate in surveying or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Successful completion of pre-employment screening, including drug and background screening, as required by company policy.

Preferred Qualifications

• Basic understanding of Trimble and Nikon equipment.
• Basic understanding of research methodology, data analysis, and estimation metrics.
• Experience in general trade carpentry.
• Two years of construction carpentry experience.
