Basic Function
Assists teachers by working with Exceptional Children (EC) to achieve the goals of the student(s)' Individual Education Program(s) (IEPs) and provide access to general education as appropriate.
Essential Functions
- Assists in the instruction of individual EC students or groups of EC students in all curricular areas as directed by the teacher.
- Collects data to document individual student progress on IEP goals.
- Plans and works with teachers in devising instructional strategies.
- Assists with setup, use, and management of materials, adapted equipment, and technology devices for classroom and individual students.
- Supervises during emergency drills, assemblies, specials (e.g., PE, art, recess), field trips, and other school-related functions on and off campus.
- Acts as a bus monitor when special needs of an EC student(s) are identified by the IEP team.
- Alerts teachers to any issues or important information about individual students.
- Participates in in-service training for professional growth.
- Assists in checking materials, portfolios, correcting papers, supervising, and testing as directed.
- Helps keep bulletin boards and learning centers current.
- Supports school routines and transitions.
- Assists with attendance procedures, record keeping, ordering materials, and other duties as assigned.
- Provides physical assistance to students in self-help, clothing management, toileting (including accidents and catheterization), and feeding.
- Provides physical assistance to therapists and teachers in duties related to occupational and physical therapy and mainstreaming classes.
- Supports students by writing assignments, taking notes, or writing responses under teacher supervision.
- Assists with lifting, positioning, walking, and wheelchair pushing as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Understanding of local, state, and federal regulations related to exceptional children.
- Ability to use current technology and communication tools relevant to disabilities, including high-tech and low-tech devices.
- Effective communication skills in both oral and written formats.
- Knowledge of classroom management, differentiation, and IEP processes.
- Research-based instruction and behavior management techniques.
- Ability to comply with guidelines and deliver curriculum appropriately.
- Problem-solving skills and proactive/reactive strategies.
- Personal assistance, medical, emotional support, and other personal care skills.
- Performance monitoring using various data collection methods.
- Ability to teach others to use technology and equipment.
Education and Experience
- Completion of an Associate's Degree or two years of higher education (minimum 48 credit hours), or passing a formal assessment (Workkey, 96 hours of in-service training), or completion of the NC DOL Apprenticeship Program or NC ATA Professional Development Plan.
- Associate's Degree with a concentration in Education preferred.
- One year experience working with EC children preferred.
