Job summary

Trident Seafoods is seeking an Assistant Engineer to support the vessel's engines, boilers, deck machinery, and related systems. You will work under the Chief Engineer to ensure safe operation, preventive maintenance, and regulatory compliance aboard the vessel.

Requirements include at least 3 years as an Assistant Engineer on a similar sized vessel, advanced firefighting skills, current licenses or STCW endorsements, and First Aid/CPR.

Responsibilities
Summary:
Duties

Assists Chief Engineer in directing and overseeing the activities of the engineering support department regarding the mechanical operations, repair and maintenance functions for the vessel by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors or staff:

Essential Functions: (Responsibilities, Tasks, Supervisory Needs)
  • Directs and oversees the functionality and safety of the vessel’s engines, boilers, deck machinery, electrical, hydraulic, refrigeration and sanitary systems in accordance with Trident policy as well as local, state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Leads manages and directs capital projects (e.g. drydocking, installation and repair projects) including the scheduling, budgeting and compliance with license, permit and other applicable codes and regulations.
  • Oversees and establishes the performance and operation standards for all vessel systems. Resolves problems using solutions that involve appropriate techniques, technologies, or concepts.
  • Directs and oversees required documentation for energy management, conservation and preventative maintenance programs.
  • Analyzes and leverages human resource needs to assist with short and long-term projects.
  • Confers with management and production staff to determine engineering feasibility and cost effectiveness of present or future projects.
  • Oversees the design and implementation of training to ensure that all vessel engineering staff are properly trained, qualified and in compliance with regulatory training and/or regulatory certification requirements.
  • Forecasts operating costs of department and directs preparation of budget requests.
  • Advises management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs, and/or inter-departmental relations.
  • Provides direction and acts as example for interpretation and application of company policies and procedures to the engineering activities.
  • Analyzes and maintains a working knowledge of new technologies which may improve operations and develops recommendations accordingly.

Required Qualifications: (Education, Years of Experience, Certifications)
  • Must have at least 3 years as an Assistant Engineer on similar sized vessel
  • Advanced firefighting skills.
  • Appropriate licenses/permits of trade (e.g., CG license of appropriate tonnage. STCW endorsement, etc.) when required.
  • Current First Aid and CPR cards.
Preferred Education & Experiences
  • Extensive seafood of related industry experience preferred; Four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations that apply to the vessel being applied for
  • Knowledge of pollution abatement procedures
  • Knowledge of production needs and willingness to work with others to support production needs.
  • Ability to conduct safety drills for crew and guests.
  • Ability to manage the medical/first aid needs of the vessel.
  • Basic navigation and communication skills.
Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Work Ability Requires

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and peripheral vision.

Must be capable of boarding and departing (exiting) a vessel without assistance by moving up or climbing a gangplank, the stern ramp of a vessel and/or a vertical ladder. Must be capable of boarding/departing the vessel by being lifted in a crane or manlift. May also enter and exit a skiff from a dock, plane, or boat unassisted. Must meet at designated locations to receive instructions and place on a life jacket and an immersion suit without assistance in one minute or less. Must also move quickly without assistance to any designated lifeboat station.
