Job summary

The City of Hermosa Beach is seeking an Assistant Engineer to join its Public Works team. Under the direction of the Public Works Director, you will perform professional civil engineering work on routine to moderate projects and support city infrastructure improvements.

Qualifications

  • Degree in civil engineering or closely related field with two years of engineering experience
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license with clean driving record
  • EIT or California PE license preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, designing, and studying public works projects such as streets, sewers, parking lots, and storm drains
  • Prepare cost estimates, reports, and specifications; compute grades, areas, and volumes
  • Prepare legal descriptions, computations, maps, and other information
  • Review drainage and excavation plans for code compliance and coordination with city and contractors
  • Coordinate contract requirements with governmental agencies, utilities and others; maintain engineering files
  • Provide inspection and technical support for public works projects and counter support

Under direction of the Public Works Director, performs professional civil engineering work of routine difficulty in the Public Works Department; performs other related duties as required.

  • Assists in the planning, designing, and preliminary studying of various public works projects such as streets, sewers, parking lots, storm drains for construction and maintenance projects;
  • prepares cost estimates, reports and specifications, computes grades, areas and volumes;
  • prepares legal descriptions, computations, maps and other information;
  • checks construction site drainage and excavation plans and reviews designs submitted for consistency with codes, ordinances, specifications, and practices of the City in the field and office;
  • confers with other employees and representatives of governmental agencies, public utilities and contractors to obtain information and to coordinate contract requirements;
  • maintains engineering files;
  • may function as departmental representative at various meetings;
  • and performs related work as assigned. Provides inspection for public works projects;
  • provides technical support for Public Works office counter.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of:
  • Basic operations, services, and activities of a municipal engineering design and construction program
  • Current principles and practices of civil engineering as applied to the construction of various public works projects
  • Modern construction projects, materials and equipment; basic principles and practices of project management and administration
  • Legal implications and code requirements which will affect a project
  • Applicable safety and health regulations and City rules and regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Basic methods and techniques of engineering plan review and analysis
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet applications, and specialized engineering software programs
  • Occupational health and safety standards
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations
Ability to:
  • Perform professional engineering duties involved in the design, development, and construction management of a variety of capital improvement projects
  • Serve as the project manager on one or more Capital Improvement Program
  • Prepare, review, interpret, analyze, and modify engineering plans, drawings, specifications, contract documents, and engineering reports for conformance to professional standards and approved budgets
  • Perform engineering computations and make recommendations for the solution of engineering problems
  • Prepare clear and concise administrative and technical reports; respond to questions and inquiries from a variety of sources regarding engineering and development projects
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this required knowledge would be:

Educational equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in civil engineering or closely related field and two years of increasingly responsible engineering experience.

License/Certificates:

Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license with a safe driving record is required and must be maintained during the course of employment.
