Job summary

Department of Parks & Recreation in New York City is seeking an Assistant Electrical Engineer to support electrical design for parks and recreation facilities at the Olmsted Center in Queens. You will develop drawings, specs and cost estimates, manage projects, coordinate with the DOT on lighting, and perform field inspections through turnover.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with related experience, with preferred AutoCAD proficiency and strong communication

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university with one year of full-time satisfactory experience in electrical engineering work; or
• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.
• A master’s degree in electrical engineering can substitute for one year of full-time experience.
• A degree in any other engineering area is not acceptable.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD preferred.
• Proficiency in Word and Excel preferred.
• Knowledge of PowerPoint, Photoshop, and 3D Rendering is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision, perform electrical engineering work of moderate difficulty, including power distribution and lighting for buildings and facilities.
• Develop electrical drawings, specifications and estimates of quantities for projects with electrical components.
• Manage electrical engineering projects, ensure Capital process is followed and keep projects on schedule and within budget.
• Coordinate with DOT Division of Street Lighting for security lighting design and submittals.
• When directed, manage and review electrical consultant projects.
• Conduct field inspections before and during design and construction, and through turnover.
• Provide engineering components designs and details.
• Engage in research, investigations, studies and examinations of electrical components as needed.

These public spaces, encompassing over 5,000 properties and 14% of the city’s land and coastline, include seawalls and waterfronts, pedestrian bridges, beaches and boardwalks, parks and playgrounds, historic houses, recreation centers and pools.

Major Responsibilities

• Under supervision, perform electrical engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility, including electrical power distribution, lighting for buildings, recreational facilities, sports lighting, security lighting, fire detection and communication systems.
• Develop electrical drawings, specifications and estimates of quantities for projects with electrical engineering components to Capital designers.
• Manage electrical engineering projects, ensure that the Capital process for review and approval is followed and keep projects on schedule and within budget.
• Coordinate with the Department of Transportation Division of Street Lighting for security lighting design and submittals.
• When directed, manage and review electrical consultant engineering projects.
• Conduct field inspections before and during design and construction, as well as through turnover.
• Supply with engineering component designs and details.
• Engage in research, investigations, studies and examinations of electrical components as needed.

Fees: Hired candidates will be subject to a processing fee between $40.00 to $101.00 based on the salary range of title. Hired candidates who are not currently employed by the City will be subject to a $104.50 background check fee.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in electrical engineering work; or
2. A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.

A master’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university can only be used to substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in electrical engineering. A degree in any other engineering area, or in any engineering technology area, is not acceptable.
