Job description

Carnegie Mellon University's Cyert Center for Early Education is searching for a part-time Assistant Early Childhood Educator to join their team in a mixed-age infant and young toddler classroom. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. The Assistant Early Childhood Educator has a passion for early childhood education, demonstrates a commitment to Developmentally Appropriate Practice, and upholds the NAEYC code of ethics. The position is responsible for supporting the infant classroom educators to provide a nurturing, consistent, developmentally appropriate environment that meets the cognitive, emotional, social, and physical needs of children.

Core responsibilities will include:
  1. Child Education and Care - Along with the educational team, educates and cares for infants and toddlers, fostering their individual growth and development.
  2. Program Development and Curriculum Delivery - Supports organizing a cohesive program and embodies the Center's philosophy (Reggio Emilia Approach and Developmentally Appropriate Practice).
  3. Team Building and Collaboration - Values collaboration and teamwork to co-create a curriculum that uses inquiry-based teaching strategies with an emphasis on collaborative learning.
  4. Compliance and Safety - Adheres to the Department of Human Services licensing regulations and NAEYC accreditation standards.
  5. Family Engagement - Supports efforts in developing regular, ongoing, two-way communication with parents about children's experiences, development, and learning.
  6. Professional Development - Commits to best practices and continued professional growth, earning 24 hours of required professional development annually.

You should demonstrate:
  1. Full range of body motion needed and the mobility to interact with young children.
  2. Ability to supervise and monitor safety through sight and sound in the classroom and playground without breaks in consciousness.
  3. Ability to lift and carry children up to 40 pounds, move light furniture and play materials, and push a stroller with 4-6 infants and toddlers.
  4. Ability to stand for long periods and sit on the floor.
  5. Must pass a pre-employment physical exam (including TB test) for clearance.
Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma or GED and 30 college credit hours in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education, or human services.
  2. OR high school diploma or GED including 600+ hours of secondary training related to age and training.
  3. OR high school diploma or GED, 15 college credit hours in relevant fields, and 1 year of experience with children.
  4. OR high school diploma or GED and completion of a post-secondary training curriculum.
  5. OR high school diploma or GED and 2 years of experience with children.
Requirements:
  1. Successful background checks.
  2. Child protective clearances for PA and other states lived in over the past five years.
  3. Completion of required health and safety training within 90 days of hire.
Additional Information:

This is a part-time (~30 hours/week), non-exempt position based in Pittsburgh, PA.

Sponsorship: Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. as CMU does not sponsor visas for this role.
