Position Description

An Assistant District Attorney in the Post-Conviction Bureau represents the State of Texas in appellate courts including the Court of Criminal Appeals, Texas Supreme Court, and Harris County trial courts. Responsibilities include supporting trial prosecutors through research, motions, and responses in complex litigation.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Preparing appellate briefs, motions for rehearing, petitions for discretionary review, and related responses.
  • Presenting oral arguments in appellate courts such as the First and Fourteenth Court of Appeals, Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, and Texas Supreme Court.
  • Preparing motions related to direct appeals.
  • Investigating and responding to writs of habeas corpus, including preparing Answers and Findings of Fact and Conclusions of Law.
  • Participating in evidentiary hearings involving habeas corpus allegations.
  • Providing legal research support to trial prosecutors and occasionally arguing legal issues in Harris County criminal courts.
Education and Experience
  • Juris Doctorate and a current license to practice law with the Texas State Bar.
  • Excellent research and persuasive writing skills.
  • Previous appellate or post-conviction writ experience is strongly preferred.
