Qualifications

  • Represents the State in court appearances including preliminary hearings, bond hearings, pre-trial hearings and motions, sentencing procedures.
  • Reviews cases, interviews witnesses, researches legal arguments, prepares witnesses to present testimony and presents cases to the Court.
  • Gathers and analyzes evidence in cases including viewing and inspecting crime scenes.
  • Presents evidence against accused to the Grand Jury for indictment.
  • All applicants must be in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia or eligible for reciprocity admittance; admission to Georgia Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.

Job description

The Assistant District Attorney performs professional legal work encompassing aspects and stages of criminal cases prosecuted by the District Attorney's Office. The following duties are representative of the work required for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.

  • Drafts indictments, accusations, presentments, and other legal pleadings and motions ancillary to any criminal case.
  • Prepares and represents the State in various court appearances including, preliminary hearings, bond hearings, pre-trial hearings and motions, sentencing procedures, quasi-civil condemnation procedures from start to finish, etc.
  • Reviews cases, determines if all investigation is complete, interviews and selects appropriate witnesses, interviews victims, researches and responds to legal arguments, prepares witnesses to present testimony, presents cases to the Court, conducts direct and cross examination before Judge or jury, drafts legal documents and counsels with the defense attorneys.
  • Gathers and analyzes evidence in cases including viewing and inspecting crime scenes.
  • Reviews pertinent decisions, policies, regulations, and other legal matters pertaining to the case.
  • Presents evidence against accused to the Grand Jury for indictment.
  • Prepares memorandums of law, briefs, and legal research for trial and appellate cases.
  • Prepares and files all pleadings relating to extradition including detainers, fugitive warrants, etc.
  • Attends meetings, various community events, serves on committees and makes presentations as needed in the community.
  • Communicates effectively, professionally, and respectfully with fellow employees, victims, witnesses, law enforcement personnel, court staff, judges, attorneys, and members of the public.
  • Performs all duties in compliance with the United States Constitution, the Constitution of the State of Georgia, applicable federal and state laws, ethical obligations, office policies, procedures, and directives.
  • Completes other responsibilities as requested by the District Attorney or their designee.

All applicants must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia or be in good standing with another state's bar association that is eligible for reciprocity admittance to the State Bar of Georgia; and be admitted to practice before the Georgia Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. Experience in working with domestic Violence case is desired.

  • Knowledge of County ordinance and charter provisions and of general local, state and federal laws.
  • Knowledge of judicial procedures at all judicial levels.
  • Knowledge of the organizational processes, functions, and legal limitations on the authority of the various County departments.
  • Ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence, and precedents and to effectively present such materials either orally or in writing.
  • Ability to maintain the confidence of public and court officials at all levels.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and with members of the general public.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and relevant office programs.
  • Ability to utilize discretion in the handling of confidential information and sensitive materials.
