Job ID: 8435 • Location: Tacoma, WA • Work Location: This position is based in Tacoma, WA. This is an on-campus role only. • Employment type: Part Time • Regular/Temporary: Regular • Appointment: Regular, part-time (.75 FTE) position.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director works with the Director to meet SAA's mission of providing access to academics and university life on campus. It involves overseeing departmental operations, case management and staff supervision, to maintain high service standards and compliance with ADA and relevant regulations.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
  • Make critical decisions when the Director is unreachable or on leave
  • Collaborate with Director on regular review of department procedures and processes to determine effectiveness and adherence to SAA mission statement; propose procedural changes as deemed appropriate
  • Assist SAA Director in management of a team of professional staff who actively foster the full and meaningful inclusion of students with disabilities at the university
  • Participates in day-to-day direct student service, campus partner support, issue resolution, documentation review and caseload management
  • Meet with prospective students and families to explain accommodations in higher education, clarify SAA's role and their expectations
  • Collaborates with students to identify barriers to full participation in the curricular, co-curricular and housing environments and to determine appropriate accommodations through the interactive process
  • Maintain accurate and confidential electronic records of all student interactions, requests and accommodations
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and/or several years' experience in office operations management or customer service, ideally in an educational environment.

  • Ability to prioritize, anticipate need and effectively delegate tasks
  • Ability to communicate concepts and procedures clearly and effectively both verbally and in written format
  • Superior attention to detail, while also considering the big picture
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software, with the ability to work with databases specific to University needs
  • Strong skills in customer service, problem solving and organization
  • Experience in a diverse work environment with an appreciation of the value of diversity in a work
  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community
Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or related field and three years of experience working directly with students with disabilities. Experience should demonstrate the ability to work with college-age students who have been diagnosed with physical, medical, psychological and learning disabilities.

  • Knowledge regarding learning disabilities, ADHD, physical disabilities, sensory impairments and other conditions as well as current adaptive/assistive technology
  • Strong knowledge of Section 504, The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), FERPA, and other state and federal laws pertaining to higher education and disability
Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated range for this position is $25.45 to $27.30. Decisions about starting salaries are made based on the extent and relatedness of the candidate's education and experience and on internal equity and market considerations.

Notes on Benefits

Positions that work less than .75 FTE (1,560 hours per year) do not qualify for long-term disability or education benefits. Positions that work less than .50 FTE (1,040 hours per year) will accrue paid sick leave but are not eligible for additional benefits. Temporary positions that work at least .50 FTE (1,040 hours per year) will be eligible for benefits. This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
