General Summary of Position

Are you an experienced nurse looking for an opportunity to formally lead? The Assistant Nursing Director role is a great position that allows you to remain close to the bedside while serving as a front-line nurse leader. MedStar Health is seeking a dedicated and engaged Assistant Nursing Director to lead the Pulmonary Medicine Unit. As a member of our Division of Nursing's (DON) leadership team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of patient care in this specialized field.

Position Overview

In collaboration with the Nursing Director, the Assistant Nursing Director is responsible for the leadership and management of the Pulmonary Unit at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The role involves fostering staff commitment to improving quality, safety, and cost-effective patient care outcomes. You will direct and coordinate nursing and patient care delivery by professional and support personnel, promoting an environment aligned with the Division of Nursing and MedStar Health's mission, vision, and values.

Unit Highlights

The Pulmonary Medicine Unit cares for patients with tracheotomies and many requiring mechanical ventilation. It is an excellent environment for developing nursing skills and managing changing patient conditions. The team values collaboration, knowledge-sharing, teamwork, and communication to ensure a high-quality, safe, and compassionate patient and family experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop department goals and ensure compliance with hospital policies, clinical practices, guidelines, and standards.
  • Provide shift-based clinical leadership, role modeling professional behaviors, delegating activities, and managing the nursing team.
  • Collaborate with nursing leadership, medical staff, and other departments to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Participate in patient rounding to review patient status and engage with patients and families.
  • Assist in hiring, evaluating, promoting, and counseling staff; provide coaching as needed.
  • Maintain clinical knowledge and skills; provide direct patient care as required.
  • Assume administrative responsibilities in the absence of the director and support colleagues as needed.

Qualifications
