General Summary of Position

Are you an experienced nurse looking for an opportunity to formally lead? The Assistant Nursing Director role is a great position that allows you to remain close to the bedside while serving as a front-line nurse leader. MedStar Health is seeking a dedicated and engaged Assistant Nursing Director to help lead the Medical Cardiac ICU team. As a member of our Division of Nursing's (DON) leadership/management team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of patient care in this specialized field. This position is on the Evening Shift.

Position Overview

In collaboration with the Nursing Director, the Assistant Nursing Director is responsible for the leadership and management of the Cardiac ICU at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. The role involves fostering staff commitment to improving quality, safety, and cost-effective patient care outcomes. You will direct and coordinate nursing and patient care delivery for the unit-based professional and support personnel. As a nursing leader, you will promote an environment aligned with the Division of Nursing and MedStar Health's mission, vision, and values.

Unit Highlights

2NE cares for acutely ill medical cardiology and cardiovascular surgery patients and their families. Patients on this unit have critical heart conditions, and we are here to treat them! Primary diagnoses include heart failure, heart attacks, post-operative vascular and cardiac surgery, and cardiogenic shock. Our patients require expert nursing care, and our medical model emphasizes collaboration between cardiology fellows, residents, and interns to provide exceptional and empathetic care.

Key Responsibilities
  1. In collaboration with the Nurse Director, develop department goals and objectives, ensuring compliance with hospital policies, clinical practices, guidelines, and regulatory standards.
  2. Provide shift-based clinical leadership by role modeling professional behaviors, proper delegation, and managing the nursing team, while promoting activities that enhance department satisfaction and engagement.
  3. Collaborate with the nursing leadership team, medical staff, and other departmental leaders to ensure seamless patient care.
  4. Participate in patient rounding to review patient status and engage with patients and their families.
  5. Assist the Nursing Director with hiring, evaluating, promoting, and terminating personnel as needed; initiate coaching and counseling of staff.
  6. Maintain clinical knowledge and skills; provide direct patient care as required.
  7. Assume administrative responsibilities in the absence of the director and provide coverage for colleagues when needed.
