Summary

The Assistant Director (AD) of Housing and Residence Life is a live-on, senior member of the University Housing and Residence Life team. Reporting to the Director of Housing and Residence Life, the AD oversees both the residence life and operational management of Laker Village Apartments and Laker Hall. The AD plays a critical leadership role within the Division of Student Affairs, contributing to university-wide initiatives that support retention, student success, and social mobility. The role blends strategic oversight with day-to-day engagement, focusing on community development, student support, crisis response, housing operations, and student leadership development. This position requires a highly motivated, solutions-oriented individual with a deep understanding of student development theory, experience in residential education, and strong operational acumen.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Residence Life Leadership & Curriculum Development (35%)

  • Provide leadership and vision for the residential experience at Laker Village and Laker Hall, including the development and implementation of a residential curriculum that supports freshmen, sophomore, transfer, and non-traditional student populations.
  • Collaborate with academic affairs, career services, and campus partners to promote academic success, career readiness, and personal development.
  • Create and support inclusive communities where all students feel welcomed, valued, and supported.
  • Oversee themed communities and co-curricular programming that align with strategic retention and engagement goals.

Supervision and Student Staff Development (25%)

  • Supervise Residence Directors, Graduate Residence Directors, and Lead Resident Assistants; provide indirect supervision to 20-30 Resident Assistants.
  • Lead the recruitment, selection, training, and ongoing professional development of paraprofessional staff.
  • Advise student leadership groups such as the Laker Village Council.
  • Ensure staff compliance with policy, effective duty coverage, and proactive student engagement.

Operations and Administrative Oversight (20%)

  • Manage day-to-day operations of Laker Village Apartments and the community clubhouse, serving as the point of contact for non-maintenance-based student concerns.
  • Maintain accurate records related to occupancy, assignments, incident reports, programming, and assessment.
  • Reviews and inputs all key/swipe access, carts, and other items provided at Service Desks.
  • Conducts regular key audits and ensures keys are secured and organized.
  • Maintain online door and gate activity, including battery change-outs and initiating access vendor service requests.
  • Support lockout functions for Laker Hall and Laker Village.
  • Coordinate University Housing opening and closing processes in collaboration with facilities and campus partners.
  • Assist with summer housing operations, including camps, conferences, and special assignments.

Crisis Response and Management (15%)

  • Participate in an on-call system providing emergency/critical incident assistance to students in the halls in accordance with CSU and University Housing and Residence Life emergency procedures.
  • Supportand respond to issues related to students of concern, their guests and family members during and after regular business hours.
  • Adjudicate low level student conduct cases of concern

Student Affairs Generalist & Campus Engagement (5%)

  • Represent University Housing in broader Student Affairs initiatives, committees and divisional programming.
  • Attend and support campus-wide events and student engagement efforts

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field required. Minimum of 2 years experience in Residence Life or a related student affairs area required. Demonstrated supervisory experience and student engagement success required. Experience working with diverse student populations, included transfer and non-traditional students preferred.

Skills and Abilities

Must have strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to lead diverse teams and foster inclusiveness communities. Crisis management and problem-solving skills with sound judgment. Knowledge of student development theory and best practices in residential education. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with housing management systems, including StarRez preferred. Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.

Additional Information

This is a live-on position. The AD is required to reside in University Housing and maintain availability for on-call responsibilities.
