Job summary

University of New Haven in West Haven, CT, seeks an Assistant Director of Financial Aid to lead frontline customer support and service. The role includes reviewing aid files, awarding aid, and supporting the Financial Aid and One Stop Offices.

You will analyze needs, verify awards, counsel families, manage loan processing, and generate reports while staying current on federal regulations and offering workshops on and off campus.

Qualifications

  • Administrative experience in higher education desired
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience with Banner and PowerFAIDS preferred
  • Knowledge of Title IV financial aid regulations
  • Understanding of federal tax returns
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams

Responsibilities

  • Perform needs analysis, packaging and verification of student financial aid awards and files
  • Process financial aid for students studying away from UNH (including study abroad, co-op)
  • Counsel students and families regarding aid applications and eligibility
  • Assist with student and parent loan processing
  • Generate financial aid reports as needed
  • Present financial aid information and workshops on/off campus
  • Stay informed on state and federal financial aid regulations
  • Provide exceptional service to students and other customers in person, online, and via phone/email
  • Propose process improvements and efficiencies
  • Promote teamwork across Enrollment Services

The Assistant Director of Financial Aid will contribute to the Office of Financial Aid by being part of a team that provides frontline customer support and service regarding financial aid. The assistant director will also review aid files, process aid awards, and support the operation of the Financial Aid Office and the One Stop Office.

You will:
  • Perform needs analysis, packaging and verification of student financial aid awards and files
  • Process financial aid for all students studying away from UNH including study abroad, co-op programs, etc
  • Counsel students and families regarding aid applications, eligibility and programs
  • Assist with student and parent loan processing
  • Generate financial aid reports as needed
  • Present financial aid information and workshops both on and off campus to a variety of audiences
  • Remain informed and updated on state and federal financial aid regulations
  • Assist the Office of Financial Aid by providing exceptional service to students and other customers, both internal and external, in person, online, and via phone and email
  • Propose innovative solutions to issues identified during customer contact
  • Research process improvements and implement efficiencies
  • Promote teamwork, collaboration, and resource sharing across the Office of Financial Aid and other Enrollment Services areas
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
  • Administrative experience in higher education desired
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred and two to four years of experience in a Financial Aid Office preferred – equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Experience with Banner preferred
  • Experience with PowerFAIDS preferred
  • Knowledge of Title IV financial aid regulations
  • Understanding and comprehension of federal tax returns
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are required
  • A commitment to enhancing the internal and external customer experience is required
  • Professional presentation and demeanor is required
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft suite of products including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams is necessary
  • Excellent organizational skills and great attention to detail with the ability to prioritize and advance multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently and take individual initiative as well as the ability to work as a collaborative team member
  • Ability to work early morning, evening, and/or weekend hours as needed in support of student events and initiatives
