Position Summary:
The Assistant Director of Custodial Services supports the Director in overseeing district-wide custodial operations, supervising Custodial Area Managers and the Warehouse Supervisor, and ensuring high standards of cleanliness, safety, and service across KCPS facilities. This position collaborates with school and district leaders to maintain clean, safe, and well-prepared learning environments.
What You'll Be Doing: (Responsibilities)
Leadership & Personnel Management
- Assist in leading and overseeing district-wide custodial operations.
- Serve as the department lead in the Director's absence.
- Support and supervise Custodial Area Managers, Warehouse Supervisor, and assigned staff.
- Recruit, onboard, train, coach, evaluate, and retain custodial staff.
- Address employee performance and employee relations matters in accordance with district policies and labor agreements.
- Serve as the primary liaison between school administrators and Custodial Services, responding promptly to operational concerns.
Operations & Service Excellence
- Establish and enforce district standards for cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and custodial service delivery.
- Conduct building inspections, quality audits, and corrective-action follow-up.
- Coordinate custodial staffing and support for events, emergencies, and special projects; collaborate with Facilities and district departments to meet building-service needs.
- Partner with Facilities and Maintenance to address building needs impacting custodial operations.
- Oversee work-order processes and ensure timely completion of custodial service requests.
- Manage custodial supplies, equipment, warehouse operations, and vendor performance.
- Develop and monitor operational performance metrics and service-level outcomes.
Compliance, Safety & Resource Management
- Develop and deliver training on custodial procedures, equipment use, safety practices, and district expectations.
- Assist with departmental budget planning, monitoring, and resource allocation.
- Evaluate and recommend equipment, products, and technologies that improve efficiency, safety, and service quality.
- Ensure compliance with state and local regulations, and district policies.
- Lead safety audits, incident reviews, and corrective-action processes.
- Prepare reports and operational updates for district leadership.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of department and district goals.

To Be Successful in This Role, You’ll Need (Required Qualifications):
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in custodial operations, facilities management, or a related field.
- Extensive knowledge of custodial operations, cleaning methods, sanitation standards, custodial equipment, chemical handling, and industry best practices.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or work-order management software.

- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Facilities Management, Operations Management, or a related field.
- Experience in a K-12 school district or managing custodial operations within a large educational, governmental, healthcare, or commercial organization.
- Experience with resource allocation, and financial oversight in a multi-site environment.
- ISSA Cleaning Management Institute (CMI) certification.
- Certified Custodial Supervisor (CCS) certification and/or Certified Educational Facilities Professional (CEFP) credential.
- Facilities Management Professional (FMP) credential.

In person, 12 months - 261 days
Physical Demands:
This job requires that the employee be able to: sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands, fingers, and reach with hands and fingers; bend, stoop, and lift objects of at least 40 pounds. The job requires the employee occasionally to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Visual ability requires mono and color vision, close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
