Responsibilities

  • Set department strategy with senior and perioperative leadership and track performance goals.
  • Communicate department policies on sterilization and high-level disinfection to staff and clinicians.
  • Oversee decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, HLD, and instrument readiness across sites.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and update policies accordingly.
  • Lead policy development to support organizational goals and manage emergencies.
  • Work with Infection Prevention to maintain infection control standards.
  • Monitor finances and drive cost savings while maintaining quality.
  • Coordinate instrument standardization and equipment maintenance across locations.
  • Supervise managers and educators; hire, train, and document competencies.
  • Resolve HR matters and implement disciplinary processes when needed.

Job description

Position Summary

Assistant Director‑Kimmel Pavilion SPD‑Day Shift (35 Hours). Responsible for directing all operations of the Sterile Processing Department, ensuring the quality of processing and sterilization, managing personnel, material resources and finances, and maintaining compliance with Joint Commission, AAMI, and AORN standards. Designs and evaluates processes to improve systems and patient care outcomes, manages department safety and risk, monitors compliance with sterilization testing processes, and leads the unit and satellite areas.

Job Responsibilities
  • Partners with senior leadership and perioperative leadership to set department strategy and measurable performance‑based goals.
  • Creates and demonstrates knowledge of department policies & procedures regarding sterilization/high‑level‑disinfection and consistently articulates them to staff, management, nursing, and physicians.
  • Oversees decontamination, cleaning, assembly, sterilization, and HLD of all reusable instrumentation in the medical facility and satellite areas.
  • Maintains awareness of current regulatory requirements, ensuring policies and procedures comply with applicable regulations and standards.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors departmental policies and procedures that support organizational goals and business objectives.
  • Maintains and oversees policies and procedures for emergency situations and downtime.
  • Participates in organizational committees including Perioperative Management Committee, Infection Prevention & Control Committee, and SPD/OR Regulatory Committee.
  • Works closely with the Infection Prevention Department to establish, implement, and maintain infection control standards.
  • Monitors financial performance and identifies & implements strategies to reduce cost and improve quality of care/service.
  • Oversees implementation and maintenance of instrument and tray standardization across all services and satellite locations.
  • Ensures all equipment is maintained according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Ensures adequate supply of appropriate departmental equipment is available and properly maintained.
  • Conducts weekly quality assurance audits of the data validating all parameters including IFUs, biological testing, sterilization parameters, and productivity timings.
  • Assists IT department in day‑to‑day operational support, implementation and upgrades of hardware, software, applications and network.
  • Directly supervises the managers and educators of the department.
  • Determines appropriate staffing patterns for the department and develops processes to screen, interview, hire, train, and maintain competency and documentation of all sterile processing department staff.
  • Manages and resolves human resource, labor relations, and employee issues.
  • Implements the hospital's disciplinary process in an appropriate and timely manner when indicated.
  • Collaborates with clinical and hospital managers and educators to assure staff competency and compliance with practices and policies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Healthcare‑related field or equivalent education and experience.
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician by IAHCSMM or equivalent certification.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree.
  • 5 years of CSPD experience.
  • CIS certification.
  • CHL certification.
  • Prior experience in Lean Six Sigma or industrial engineering.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Experience with inventory control and supplies.
  • Experience with instrument tracking system.
  • Experience with data analysis and presentation skills.

Salary range: $117,107.95 – $143,634.50 annually. Actual salaries depend on experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The listed range does not include bonuses, differential pay or other forms of compensation.
