Job description

Position Summary:

Join our team as an Assistant Director-Coding at NYU Langone Health, overseeing coding operations within the HIM Department. This role involves managing the coding, abstracting, and data reporting processes for inpatient, outpatient, emergency, ancillary, and oncology services, ensuring efficiency and compliance.

Job Responsibilities:
  1. Manage coding, abstracting, and charge entry functions daily, monitor Discharged Not Final Billed (DNFB), and ensure accurate coding to positively impact revenue cycle.
  2. Provide expertise in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT-4, MS-DRG, NYS DRG, APC, and APG coding systems, and oversee data quality and reporting.
  3. Develop and maintain coding and documentation quality and compliance programs in collaboration with the Director of Coding and CDI Initiatives.
  4. Offer consultative support to outpatient and ancillary departments, and ensure documentation supports accurate coding.
  5. Stay updated on coding and reimbursement trends through professional development activities and integrate new knowledge into practice.
  6. Supervise staff productivity, quality, and turnaround times; conduct performance appraisals, and manage staffing schedules and training.
  7. Prepare documentation for administration and external agencies, and monitor coding quality through audits.
  8. Analyze and assign codes for diseases, procedures, and complications, ensuring compliance with the latest coding standards.
  9. Act as liaison with hospital personnel and outside agencies, resolving operational issues.
  10. Support the HIM and coding staff, maintain departmental policies, and manage special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Coding certification (CCS) required
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Record Technician program with RHIT credential or a BS degree with at least 8 years of coding experience
  • Minimum of 5 years management experience
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • RHIA credential preferred
  • MS or Post Baccalaureate degree in Health Informatics preferred
  • Experience in a teaching hospital or academic medical center preferred
