About This Position
Assistant Director, Austin Facilities Management – responsible for overseeing the operations, maintenance, and personnel of City of Austin facilities and property in a supervisory capacity.
Responsibilities
- Assist in directing the activities and operations of Austin Facilities Management under minimal direction.
- Manage maintenance and operations of city facilities and property by overseeing multiple sections, work groups, or service areas.
- Coordinate activities with other sections, divisions, departments, and outside agencies.
- Provide complex administrative support to the Building Services Officer.
- Develop, review, and utilize data collection and metrics to establish service and staffing levels and productivity data points for effectiveness and efficiencies.
- Participate in developing and implementing goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned service areas, programs, and operations.
- Recommend and administer policies and procedures, monitor outcomes, and recommend procedural and operational changes.
- Develop audit practices for quality‑control analysis of facility infrastructure issues and needs.
- Oversee and administer daily operations of assigned service areas and programs.
- Participate in annual budgeting: develop, forecast, monitor, and approve expenditures for staff, equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Oversee safety programs, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental requirements.
- Manage customer service, responding to and resolving difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
- Assist with developing and monitoring operations, maintenance, and capital budgets, responding to deviations from cost or timeline projections.
- Provide financial managerial reports as required.
- Assist with development and implementation of building services business plans aligned with city strategic plans.

- Knowledge of building maintenance practices, policies, and issues.
- Knowledge of real‑estate management processes, practices, and policies.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and methods.
- Knowledge of city practices, policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge of fiscal planning and budget preparation.
- Knowledge of the concepts of equity and ability to apply equity frameworks to laws, ordinances, and long‑standing practices.
- Skills in oral and written communication, data analysis, problem solving, planning, organizing, and computer use.
- Ability to manage diversity, understand inclusion, and build constructive relationships with diverse communities.
- Ability to structure a complex organization to meet changing environments and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
- Ability to respond to irregular events and emergencies and to work with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Business, Engineering, Architecture, Real Estate, or a related field.
- Four (4) years of related experience in facility maintenance or management, including two (2) years in a management capacity.
- A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for up to one (1) year of non‑management experience.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid driver’s license.
- Any additional licenses or certifications required by the position.
Salary and Benefits
Salary range: $156,000 to $166,000 annually.
