Job summary

The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for an Assistant Director of Athletic Communications within the Intercollegiate Athletics department.

The role will tell the Tommie athletics’ story across internal and external channels for 3–4 assigned teams and develop a comprehensive communications plan. Strong background in communications, digital media and content creation is required.

Qualifications

  • Two years of professional level experience in communications, preferably at the collegiate level.
  • Experience with NCAA rules and strong electronic media skills preferred.

  • Write stories, game recaps and press releases for website and media.
  • Help manage video, photography and social media content.
  • Coordinate game day coverage and gameday stats operations.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive communications plan for 3-4 teams.

Salary Range: $40,500 to $46,800

The University of St. Thomas has provided a salary range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Director – Athletic Communications position will be responsible for effectively telling the Tommie athletics’ story. This position will work across all internal and external channels to develop and implement a comprehensive communications plan for 3-4 assigned teams. This person will need a strong background in communications, digital media and content creation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Support Athletic Communications department needs

Work directly with the Director of Athletic Communications to help provide day-to-day operational support for the Tommie Athletics Communications office. Help support and manage overall department needs including structure, policy and operational flow for newly created DI Athletics Communication office.

Sport Oversight

Responsible for oversight of all aspects of athletic communication for assigned teams (3-4 teams) including:

  • Develop strategic communications plan including coordination with coaches, support staff and other key internal units.
  • Manage, train and direct students assigned to help support assigned teams.
  • Write stories, game recaps and press releases for website and other media
  • Help manage/produce video, photography and social media content
  • Manage social media channels for assigned teams
  • Support streaming for live game broadcasts
  • Manage the gameday stats function and game day staff responsible for running stats software.
  • Maintain historical records and statistics.
  • Lead the development of game programs, media guides and game notes.
  • Provide gameday coverage
  • Manage and coordinate all media requests
  • Manage communication with key external contacts (NCAA, conference contacts, opposing teams).

Student Supervision

Assist in oversight of student work program and help with the department efforts to recruit, hire, train and schedule student staff and gameday contract workers to support all aspects of the Athletic Communications department.

Other duties

Responsible for other duties as assigned by the Assistant AD of Athletic Communications.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Two years of professional level experience in communications, preferably at the collegiate level

An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Statcrew, Adobe Suite (In Design and Photoshop), NCAA Genius Live Stats or similar content management systems
  • Knowledge of NCAA and conference rules
  • Proven written communication skill and extensive electronic media skills
  • Demonstrated writing, editorial skills, a working knowledge of the media and public relations
