Job description

The Stony Brook University Advancement Assistant Director, Annual Giving position supports Advancement’s mission by developing and executing fundraising strategies that engage alumni and key stakeholders to enhance philanthropic support for the university. The Assistant Director will be responsible for managing multi-channel annual giving campaigns, leading alumni engagement efforts, and supporting strategic fundraising initiatives. They will partner closely with the Director of Annual Giving, the Constituent Experience (CX) team, Advancement colleagues, campus partners, and external vendors to support Stony Brook University Advancement’s goals.

Responsibilities:
  • Relationship Management: Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including campus partners, the CX team, and Advancement teams, to coordinate fundraising efforts and enhance alumni and donor engagement. Organize and lead meetings to align fundraising strategies with university priorities and engage prospective and current donors.
  • Project Management: Oversee and execute Annual Giving initiatives, Giving Days, Crowdfunding and other key projects. Projects will include but not be limited to:
    • Leading the development and execution of the university’s fall and spring Giving Days, including building partnerships with various units and constituencies across campus.
    • Expanding initiatives to garner support through the university’s crowdfunding platform.
    • Developing and overseeing the Giving Advocates program and senior gift for the most recent graduating classes.
    • Spearheading initiatives to increase participation in annual giving by special constituencies and for support of specific units across the institution.
  • Communication: Develop and implement clear, concise, and compelling communications for the Annual Giving team that align with Advancement objectives. Create and present materials to internal and external stakeholders to effectively convey key fundraising initiatives and engagement strategies.
  • Leadership: Mentor junior staff, providing guidance, leadership, and professional development opportunities.
  • Growth/Development: Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and best practices by attending conferences, workshops, webinars, and other opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience in fundraising, sales, events, or a related field.
  • Experience working in higher education, non-profit and/or large healthcare systems.
  • Experience with philanthropy, alumni relations, donor cultivation, events, and/or stewardship practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • Additional year(s) of full-time experience in fundraising, sales, events, or a related field.
  • Experience managing or developing cross-channel annual giving programs in higher education or non-profit environments.
Special Notes:

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
