Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine seeks an Assistant Dean for Translational Research and Commercial Innovation to lead strategy, partnerships, and programs that move discoveries from bench to bedside. The role partners with VCU TechTransfer, Ventures, and external industry to accelerate innovation and commercialization.

Qualifications

• MD, PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent terminal degree.
• Current SOM faculty appointment at Associate Professor or Professor.
• Demonstrated record of excellence in biomedical, clinical, translational, or health-related research.
• Sustained extramural funding and scholarly achievement.
• Knowledge of intellectual property development, technology transfer, commercialization processes, and innovation ecosystems.
• Leadership experience in research, innovation, entrepreneurship, or translational science.
• Ability to collaborate across academic, clinical, industry, and community stakeholders.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strategic thinking, organizational effectiveness, and program development experience.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement the SOM’s strategic vision for translational research, innovation, and commercialization.
• Lead initiatives to strengthen the translational research pipeline and move discoveries toward clinical impact.
• Increase engagement in commercialization and entrepreneurial activities across the SOM.
• Identify opportunities to align institutional strengths with scientific, clinical, and market opportunities.
• Represent the SOM in innovation and commercialization initiatives across internal and external partners.
• Mentor faculty and researchers in translational science and industry engagement.
• Develop educational programs supporting innovation and commercialization.
• Foster a culture that rewards invention disclosures, licensing, and startup activity.
