Job summary

Colorado State University’s Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) seeks an Assistant Data Scientist to support data life cycle work across multiple network offices. You will contribute to data collection, management, visualization, and publication tools, collaborating across interdisciplinary teams.

The role emphasizes scripting for metadata, QA/QC, and developing dashboards with R, Python, and ArcGIS platforms. A BS/BA and communication skills are required.

Qualifications

• BS or BA degree in computer science, information technology, geographic information systems, geography, biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
• Experience programming in the R statistical computing software or Python.
• Experience creating metadata, conducting QA/QC of ecological inventory & monitoring data, and documenting procedures to meet open data/open science requirements.
• Strong communication skills when working with various external and internal partners.
• Experience creating data visualization and data dashboards.

Responsibilities

• Data Visualization: create graphs and dashboards using R, Python, and related tools.
• Team Membership: represent CSU during work travel and collaborate across networks.
• Data Management: write and update metadata, ensure data quality, and document workflows.
• Database Management: navigate and maintain relational databases.
• Documentation: develop workflows, manuals, and SOPs; prepare project status updates.
• Support data publication: generate EML metadata, machine-readable datasets, and reports using R, R Markdown and Python.
