Job summary

The New York Botanical Garden seeks an Assistant Curator in Restoration Ecology for a career-track appointment in the Center for Conservation and Restoration Ecology. The successful candidate will develop an externally funded, field-oriented, collections-informed research program using plants to advance restoration and biodiversity.

The role emphasizes collaboration across NYBG Science, attracting extramural funding, promoting education and public engagement, and mentoring students.

Qualifications

  • PhD in ecology, botany, biology, restoration ecology, conservation biology, plant science, environmental science, or related field.
  • Postdoctoral or equivalent professional experience preferred.
  • Strong publication record and evidence of potential or current success in securing external funding to support research.
  • Demonstrated expertise in restoration ecology, plant community ecology, conservation biology, ecosystem recovery, restoration monitoring, or related field.
  • Experience working in tropical ecosystems is desirable; Caribbean and Latin America preferred.
  • Ability to design and implement field-based research and monitoring programs.
  • Strong quantitative skills in statistics, ecological modeling, GIS, remote sensing, experimental design, data science, programming, machine learning, or related quantitative approaches.
  • Ability to connect taxonomic, ecological, and applied restoration knowledge to real world sites and situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative partnerships and contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary research environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate science effectively to multiple constituencies.
  • Preference for candidates with experience teaching, advising, mentoring environmental professionals.
  • Excellent English language communication skills; languages beyond English are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a strong, innovative, internationally recognized research program in restoration ecology.
  • Design and lead field-based restoration ecology research, monitoring, and evaluation projects.
  • Leverage NYBG’s collections and resources to support research and conservation initiatives.
  • Build integrative, collaborative research programs and develop partnerships inside and outside NYBG.
  • Attract extramural funding and publish peer-reviewed outputs and reports.
  • Engage in service to NYBG Science and the broader community, including outreach and education.
