Purpose of Position

The Theatre Arts Department in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of North Dakota is seeking a part-time Assistant Costume Shop Manager.

Established in 1883, the University of North Dakota is the oldest research university in North Dakota. It is the state’s flagship university and is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as having high research activity. Founded with a strong liberal arts foundation, UND has grown into a prominent scientific research university and was recently ranked among the top 100 public and top 25 most innovative universities in the country by U.S. News and World Report and is widely regarded as among the top universities in the American Northern Plains region. UND offers degrees in more than 225 fields of study with over 14,000 students. It is the home of the state’s only School of Law. The School of Medicine has major initiatives in rural and public health, and Aerospace is home to one of the first and largest unmanned aerial vehicle programs in the world.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • The Assistant Costume Shop Manager collaborates with the Costume Designer/Costume Shop Manager to oversee the fabrication and fit of all garments for all theatrical productions.
  • The Assistant Costume Shop Manager schedules and supervises students working in the costume shop, assisting and guiding as needed based on varying levels of sewing ability, all with the goal of ensuring projects assigned by the Costume Designer/Costume Shop Manager are completed in time for use in each show as shown on the costume shop calendar.
  • Daily tasks also include prepping projects, alterations, creating a To Do List and establishing the workflow for each UND Theatre production.
  • The Assistant Costume Shop Manager will, depending on the needs of the show, use both existing (purchased) and custom patterns to construct costumes and guide students in creating costumes.
  • The Assistant Costume Shop Manger will have responsibility for maintaining costume shop space and the costume storage space.
  • The Assistant Costume Shop Manager must be able to oversee 5-10 students alongside the costume shop manager.

  • Ability to maintain sewing machines
  • Ability to create garments using purchased patterns
  • Highly organized and self-sufficient for meeting deadlines
  • Ability to effectively organize and lead a team of students with varying levels of costume
    shop or sewing experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a proven ability to mentor, teach, and
    collaborate effectively in diverse academic environments.
