POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Cook will work under the guidance of the Food Service Director to ensure food safety and timely meal service to campers. Responsibilities include maintaining supply inventories, ensuring kitchen cleanliness, assisting in serving three meals daily during camp season, and upholding Food Safety standards.

Camp setting: The YMCA operates traditional day and resident camps in Harriman State Park, NY, near Lake Kanawauke, 45 minutes from Hackensack. Transportation is provided from the YMCA. Activities include swimming, boating, fishing, arts & crafts, sports, archery, nature exploration, hiking, rock climbing, and challenge courses.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensure food service operations meet health standards.
  • Clean and sanitize all kitchen and dining areas and equipment.
  • Assist in food preparation and meal serving.
  • Set up and break down dining hall tables.
  • Manage food storage and leftovers at proper temperatures.
  • Wash dishes, utensils, and linens following safety protocols.
  • Assist with inventory management of food and supplies.
  • Be aware of camper allergies and dietary restrictions.
  • Follow code of conduct, rules, and expectations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma; college credits or degree in Education preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of food prep, culinary arts, and kitchen hygiene.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Problem-solving skills and initiative aligned with YMCA mission.
  • Ability to work in a team and identify risk factors.
  • First-Aid, CPR, and AED certification may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must have strength, agility, and mobility for indoor and outdoor activities.
