POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Food Service Director and the Evening Supervisor, the Assistant Cook is responsible for all phases of meal preparation and service for their scheduled shifts, contributing to a quality food service facility, exhibiting excellent customer service, and maintaining the kitchen and dining hall in a clean and sanitary condition.

Essential Functions

• Assist the cook with general prep, salad bar prep, and ensure all food items are prepared as required.
• Train and assist in training new kitchen assistants.
• Ensure meals are served on time.
• Help with defrosting food safely and storing leftovers properly, including labeling.
• Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in line with health codes.
• Supervise and organize kitchen assistants.
• Perform cleaning tasks regularly to keep the kitchen, dining hall, and storage areas safe and orderly.
• Operate dishwashing equipment following procedures and rules.
• Assist as a kitchen helper when needed, with a thorough understanding of the role.
• Contribute to planning and preparing food for special events and auxiliary food services.
• Foster teamwork and good morale.
• Assist the Food Service Director with organization and implementation of the Child Nutrition Program.
• Report shortages and mechanical or structural needs to the Food Service Director.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications

• At least one year of successful employment in an institutional or camp kitchen.
• Understanding of kitchen activities, cleanliness, and sanitation.
• Self-starter with the ability to work well in a team.
• Ability to follow and give directions positively, with a passion for cooking.
• SERV SAFE certification is a plus.
• Experience working with diverse populations and developing positive relationships.

Physical Demands

Must be able to stand for long periods, move easily within the kitchen, bend, kneel, squat, lift up to 30 pounds, and hear alarms or whistles.
