Job summary

The Salvation Army USA Central Territory in Omaha, NE seeks a Kitchen Assistant to help prepare wholesome meals from donated items and pantry stock, and assist in serving meals to the community.

Ideal candidates have a High School Diploma or equivalent and some experience in a commercial kitchen. Responsibilities include daily food prep, maintaining sanitary conditions, food storage, and completing reports. Training and background checks are required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent, and experience in a commercial kitchen for at least 3 months.
• Flexibility to work on multiple projects or tasks simultaneously.
• Knowledge of basic cleaning equipment and cleaning products.
• Basic computer skills to access payroll and timekeeping via a web-based system.
• Attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

• Assist with daily food preparation and serving in line with Health Department standards.
• Maintain a sanitary kitchen, dining, and storage areas.
• Store food properly according to guidelines for cold and dry storage.
• Prepare required statistical and financial reports (gifts in kind).
• Report maintenance issues to Lead Chef or Corps Officers.
• Track volunteer hours, meal statistics, and other program forms.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Summary/Primary Purpose:

To assist Chef in the preparation of wholesome, nutritious meals primarily using donated food items and stock from the kitchen pantry and freezers. Also, to assist in dishing up and serving these meals to the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist with daily food preparation and serving in a manner consistent with Health Department food preparation, sanitation and safety standards. Take leadership with cook is away.
• Maintain a sanitary working environment in all areas including: Kitchen, Dining Room, Storage Rooms, walk in/reach in refrigerators and freezers.
• Maintain proper food storage procedures according to Health Department guidelines for cold and dry storage, including proper storage of leftover foods.
• Preparation of required statistical and financial reports (gifts in kind).
• Report needed maintenance issues to Lead Chef and/or Corps Officers.
• Keep good up with volunteer hours, meal stats, and other forms needed for program.
• All other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

High School Diploma or equivalent, Experience working in a commercial kitchen for a minimum of three months.

Must pass all applicable background checks.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must successfully complete Safe from Harm training within 90 days of hire, as established by The Salvation Army. Serve Safe Manager Certification, CPR, and AED.
