Job description

Alpha-9 Oncology is seeking a highly motivated Assistant Controller/Controller with a strong background in accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal control to join our dynamic and growing Finance team. In this high-impact role, you will partner closely with individuals on the Finance team as well as cross-functional colleagues in R&D, HR and Legal among others to ensure accurate accounting and reporting of transactions, develop scalable accounting policies and processes, and ensure internal control compliance to prepare for future SOX readiness.

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the financial infrastructure of a fast-paced, mission-driven biotechnology company developing transformative radiopharmaceutical therapies. As we grow and mature as a company, you will be an instrumental part of the Finance team and partner directly with leadership to support strategic decision-making.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, you will help build a best-in-class accounting function, contribute to strategic initiatives, and gain exposure to all facets of accounting in a clinical-stage biotechnology company. This role is based in our Boston office.

How You'll Contribute

  • Perform and oversee monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes to ensure timely, accurate financial reporting in accordance with US GAAP.
  • Prepare internal financial statements and management reports, including support for Board and Audit Committee materials.
  • Support the development and implementation of internal controls and maintain evidence of the performance of internal controls to ensure compliance and audit readiness.
  • Develop scalable accounting policies, processes and systems to support potential future public company reporting, including SOX preparedness.
  • Manage key areas of accounting operations, including maintenance of the general ledger, accounts payable, accrued/prepaid expenses, fixed assets and payroll support.
  • Support the preparation and/or review intercompany transactions, reconciliations, and eliminations to ensure accurate consolidated financial reporting.
  • Support annual audit activities, tax provision and tax return preparation, including coordination with external auditors and other third-parties.
  • Support the FP&A team in budgeting, forecasting, and cash management processes.
  • Identify and drive continuous process improvements and system enhancements within the accounting function.

The Skills You Bring

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA designation required.
  • 6–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including with biotechnology or life sciences companies.
  • Big Four or national public accounting firm experience is preferred but not required.
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP; including with its application to accounting for research and development activities. Foreign currency accounting experience a plus.
  • Prior background supporting audits, financial reporting, and the performance of internal controls in a public company environment or similar.
  • Experience with NetSuite is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to operate with a high degree of accuracy, discretion, and professionalism in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a desire to roll up your sleeves and build in a hands-on setting.
