Job summary

ENSTAR Natural Gas Company is seeking an Assistant Controller to lead the accounting function under the VP Finance. You will oversee gas accounting, tax provisions, reconciliations, and coordination with auditors in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

The role requires a CPA (preferred) and 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, with leadership experience in GAAP reporting and internal controls. Anchorage-based, offering comprehensive benefits and a stability-focused culture.

Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting/finance or related field.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of progressively responsible work experience.
  • CPA certification preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of leadership experience.
  • Experience preparing financial reports in accordance with GAAP.

Responsibilities

  • Manage ongoing gas accounting functions, including high-level calculations and GL recording.
  • Provide support for filing of GCA and rate cases.
  • Prepare income tax provisions and schedules; coordinate with TSU tax consultant.
  • Prepare financial reports for internal use and TSU.
  • Prepare account reconciliations and resolve reconciling items with staff.
  • Assist internal and external auditors with information requests and audit outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain internal controls and improve financial processes.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through education and networking.
  • Serve as resource for technical accounting research and GAAP compliance.

What You Will Do

As an Assistant Controller, you will play an essential role within our Accounting department, reporting to the VP Finance. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage ongoing gas accounting functions, including the performance of high-level calculations and analysis and recording of costs to the general ledger.
  • Provide support for the filing of GCA and rate cases.
  • Manage and assist in preparing income tax provisions and schedules. Work with TriSummit Utilities (TSU) income tax consultant when needed.
  • Prepare financial reports for internal use and TSU.
  • Prepare account reconciliations to ensure accurate financial reporting. Work with staff to research and correct any reconciliation items.
  • Work with internal and external auditors to provide information and answer questions. Review results of audits and make recommendations regarding implementation of changes.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining internal controls. Ensure ENSTAR's internal control procedures and financial processes are followed. Periodically review internal controls and financial processes for improvement.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and establishing personal networks.
  • Serve as key resource for technical accounting research. Research accounting issues for compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
What You Will Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of progressively responsible work experience.
  • Certified Public Accounting (CPA) preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of leadership experience.
  • Experience preparing financial reports in accordance with GAAP.

  • Good working knowledge of various personal computer business software applications presently used by ENSTAR. Ability to learn new systems or software packages as necessary.
