Saul Ewing is hiring for an Assistant Controller to join our Accounting Department (open to all Saul Ewing offices / remote). The Assistant Controller is responsible for providing high-level support to the Controller by managing financial status reporting, bank and GL reconciliations, escrow accounts, wire approvals, and audit deliverables. This role will also directly oversee, manage, and assist in developing four Staff Accountants, along with managing ad hoc financial projects as assigned.
Candidates must live in a state where Saul Ewing has an office (GA, MD, MA, PA, IL, FL, CA, MN, NY, NJ, DE).
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Daily Financial Status Report
- Balance Sheet for Financial Package
- ALAS backup for law type by office - yearly renewals
- Review and approve bank reconciliations
- Review and approve GL Reconciliations
- Review and approve USPTO charges
- Review and approve the following reports: Marketing Detail, Computer Contract, Computer Maintenance, Recruiting GL, Outside Attorney Fees, Library Computer Research
- Release Global Exchange VBOA and non-VBOA wires/review for miscoding and notify A/P of such
- Quick review Philadelphia and Chicago Exchange Accounts - GL 2460
- AmLaw Survey; Wells Fargo CAT Legal Specialty Survey document
- Update Daily deposit document
- Save PNC Bank Reports to iManage
- Handle outgoing Wires; PNC main account
- Handle Baltimore, NY and Philadelphia Escrow
- Update IBX Worksheet(s)
- Send out emails of missing time to Attorneys
- Prepare Minnesota Escrow 18-1600/1601 WF Acct #0221 Bank Reconciliation
- Prepare RJ-08 and JE's, as needed
- Prepare PDFs of PNC Bank Statements and Bank reconciliation reports to Wilmington office for their annual audit
- Update Fixed Partner & Counsel Incentive Bonuses document, send out email to Partners; Escrow Review, Escheat checks
- Submit unclaimed property claims
- Research work: checks received, old reconciling items
- Aderant Conversion - Coordinate and train A/P staff and Staff Accountants on entering bank accounts and related information into Aderant
- Gather voided checks and prepare summary document of same
- Project Manager for trust module Aderant conversion
- Email returned deposit check pdf's to A/R clerk
- Pitney Bowes - Keep track of funds
- Troubleshoot issues with bank reconciliations
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting with 7+ years of experience, law firm or professional services preferred
- Experience as an assistant controller in a law firm close to Saul Ewing's size
- Experience managing and leading a team
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of general accounting principals (GAAP)
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables and formulas
- Experience with GL accounting, bank reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Experience with ERP/accounting systems; Aderant experience preferred
- Knowledge of trust accounting, legal billing, partner compensation, and escrow accounting preferred

Compensation
The pay for this position will be determined based on relevant skills, experience, education, external market data, internal equity, and other job-related factors. The anticipated pay range for this role is between $120,000 - $155,000 annually.
