The Assistant Controller plays a key role in ensuring the financial integrity and operational efficiency of St. Margaret’s Episcopal School. Reporting to the Controller, this position is responsible for overseeing a variety of accounting functions, including financial reporting, audit coordination, compliance, and budget support. The Assistant Controller works closely with internal departments, external auditors, and the school’s property management partners. This role also supervises members of the Business Office team and ensures timely, accurate, and compliant financial operations in support of the school’s mission and strategic goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Assists in preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Maintains bank and balance sheet account reconciliations
  • Assists with annual audit preparation and coordinates with external auditors
  • Assists in preparing IRS Form 990, LLC filings, and other required tax compliance documents
  • Collaborates with the school’s property management company regarding LLC financial matters
  • Participates in budget development, monitoring, and reporting
  • Conducts financial analysis to support data-driven decision-making
  • Ensures compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulations
  • Maintains and improves internal financial controls, including operational efficiencies
  • Supervise Accounts Payable Specialist and Business Operations Manager
  • Assists in managing accounts payable, student billing, and financial aid processes
  • Prepares financial reports for the Board of Trustees and school leadership
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for PacWest Property Management; reviews and validates rent rolls, forecasts rental income, and advises the CFOO on appropriate rental rates based on operating cost projections.
  • Partners with the Controller and Director of Facilities to manage, analyze, and forecast the Plant, Property, Replacement, Renovation, and Special Maintenance (PPRRSM) budget. Provide quarterly report to CFOO and Head of School
  • Partner with the Executive Director of Advancement to reconcile and report Capital Campaign accounting, Annual Fund forecasting and managing all other restricted funds.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA certification preferred
  • Nonprofit accounting experience highly desirable

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in an educational or nonprofit setting
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
  • Advanced proficiency in financial management software, including Blackbaud Financial Edge and advanced Excel skills
  • Experience with fund accounting and restricted/unrestricted fund management
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities with strong attention to detail
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Leadership experience and team management skills
  • Commitment to the mission and values of St. Margaret’s Episcopal School

COMPENSATION:

  • Salary Range: $90,000-$115,000 annually
  • Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, Short and Long-Term Disability, and Life Insurance
  • Paid Time Off: accrue up to 3 weeks of vacation, 2 weeks of sick pay, approximately 20 holidays including approximately a 10-day Christmas break
  • Retirement: 403 (b) Contribution
  • Salary Continuance

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is based in a standard office environment and requires prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. The employee must be able to move throughout campus, communicate effectively in person and by phone, and occasionally lift and carry materials up to 25 pounds. Visual and auditory acuity are required to analyze financial data and interact with colleagues.
