Job summary

Family Powersports is seeking an Assistant Controller to oversee accounting and financial operations across multiple dealership locations in Texas. The role partners with leadership to ensure accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and standardized processes while supporting month-end and year-end closes.

The ideal candidate has 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, strong GAAP knowledge, and expertise in multi-location environments. Lightspeed experience is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
  • Master’s degree preferred in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
  • 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in automotive, powersports, or multi-location settings.
  • Strong GAAP knowledge, general ledger proficiency, and month-end close experience.
  • Experience with multi-entity or multi-location operations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with consolidation of monthly financial statements across all dealership locations.
  • Lead portions of the month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
  • Maintain General Ledger integrity and chart of accounts consistency.
  • Review balance sheet reconciliations and research discrepancies or unusual trends.
  • Ensure accurate intercompany and inter-store transactions and eliminations.
  • Assist with inventory accounting, flooring reconciliations, manufacturer receivables, banking, and other dealership-specific accounts.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and financial reporting.
  • Prepare financial variance analysis and KPI reporting for executive leadership.
  • Analyze dealership and departmental performance, including Sales, F&I, Parts, and Service.
  • Identify financial trends, cost-control opportunities, risks, and process improvements.
  • Assist leadership with understanding financial results and operational performance.
  • Provide Accounting support and guidance to dealership management across multiple locations.
  • Support and provide guidance to transactional Accounting team members.
  • Review reconciliations and Accounting work as assigned.
  • Maintain working knowledge of key Accounting functions and provide backup coverage when needed.
  • Provide high-level support for AP, warranty accounting, vehicle inventory, funding, banking, inter-store reconciliations, and other transactional Accounting functions.
  • Assist with cross-training and standardization of Accounting processes.
  • Monitor internal controls, cash handling procedures, expense management, and compliance with company Accounting policies.
  • Assist with external audits, tax preparation, lender reporting, and year-end requirements.
  • Ensure Accounting records and processes follow company policies and applicable accounting standards.
  • Support documentation and process standardization across dealership locations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve Accounting accuracy, efficiency, and internal controls.
  • Leverage dealership management systems and Accounting technology to improve reporting and workflow.
  • Recommend automation and process improvements.
  • Assist with Accounting integration of acquisitions, new dealership locations, or organizational changes.

Job description

The Assistant Controller supports enterprise-wide accounting and financial operations across multiple dealership locations. This position works closely with the Controller, executive leadership, Accounting team, and store-level management to ensure financial accuracy, strong internal controls, consistent processes, and timely reporting.

The ideal candidate has strong technical accounting and analytical skills, understands multi-location operations, and has the ability and desire to grow into a senior financial leadership role.

  • Assist with preparation of consolidated monthly financial statements across all dealership locations.
  • Lead portions of the month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
  • Maintain General Ledger integrity and chart of accounts consistency.

  • Experience with inventory accounting and multi-entity or multi-location operations preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required.
  • Dealership management system experience preferred; Lightspeed experience is a plus.
  • CPA or CPA-track experience is a plus but not required.
  • Strong technical Accounting and analytical skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and financial accuracy.
  • Strong reconciliation, research, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to identify financial trends and translate data into useful information for leadership.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and strict Accounting deadlines.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across Accounting and operational leadership.
  • Ability to support and develop a cross-trained Accounting team.
  • Desire and ability to grow into a senior Accounting leadership role.
Performance Expectations

Success in this position requires a high level of analytical thinking, problem-solving, and attention to detail, with the ability to identify financial discrepancies, determine root causes, and drive issues through resolution.

The Assistant Controller is expected to understand the broader financial impact of accounting activity, recognize trends and potential risks, and provide meaningful insight to the Controller and leadership.

This position must also demonstrate a strong willingness to learn and understand all functions within the Accounting department, including transactional and operational accounting processes. The Assistant Controller should be capable of stepping in to provide guidance, support, and coverage across Accounting functions when needed.

Success will also be measured by accurate and timely financial reporting, effective month-end close, strong General Ledger and balance sheet controls, consistent follow-through, process improvement, and the ability to help develop a knowledgeable, cross-trained, and accountable Accounting team.

This is a full-time, salaried position generally working Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Additional hours may be required during month-end, year-end, audits, budgeting, acquisitions, or other high-volume Accounting periods.
