Job summary

Planet Networks is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to lead the financial close, GL, and reporting in Newton, NJ. This hands-on role covers fixed assets, CIP, internal controls, audits, and NetSuite optimization.

You will partner with various departments to ensure accurate costs and timely statements. The ideal candidate has 5–8 years of accounting experience, a strong GAAP foundation, and advanced Excel skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
• 5–8 years progressive accounting experience.
• Strong knowledge of US GAAP and financial reporting.
• Experience with month-end close, GL, reconciliations, and statements.
• Fixed assets, depreciation, and capitalization accounting experience.
• Excellent Excel and ERP systems experience.

Responsibilities

• Partner with the Controller to manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities.
• Prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and schedules.
• Assist in preparing accurate financial statements and management reports.
• Maintain GL and balance-sheet integrity; investigate aged items.
• Manage accounting for fixed assets, CIP, depreciation, capitalization, and placed-in-service.
• Collaborate with Construction, Engineering, Procurement, and Operations for costs.
• Ensure net-new accounting policies, controls, and procedures.
• Support external audits and regulatory compliance.

Planet Networks is seeking an experienced accounting professional to join our Finance organization as Assistant Controller. This is a hands-on individual-contributor role with significant responsibility for the financial close, general ledger, financial reporting, fixed assets, construction-in-progress accounting, internal controls, audit support, and financial systems.

Planet Networks is a growing telecommunications company that builds and operates fiber network infrastructure. The Assistant Controller will play an important role in ensuring that our accounting processes, controls, and reporting capabilities scale with the business.

Key Responsibilities

• Partner with the Controller to manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close activities.
• Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules.
• Assist in preparing accurate and timely financial statements and management reporting.
• Maintain general ledger and balance-sheet integrity and investigate unusual or aged items.
• Manage accounting for fixed assets, construction-in-progress, depreciation, capitalization, and placed-in-service activity.
• Partner with Construction, Engineering, Procurement, and Operations to ensure network construction costs are captured accurately.
• Apply U.S. GAAP and research accounting questions as needed.
• Support accounting for revenue recognition, leases, financing transactions, and other applicable areas.
• Assist in maintaining accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
• Serve as a key resource for external audit preparation and support tax and regulatory compliance activities.
• Support the implementation and continued optimization of NetSuite.
• Identify opportunities to automate accounting processes, improve controls, reduce manual work, and accelerate the close.
• Work cross-functionally to resolve accounting and financial reporting matters.
• Support the Controller and Finance leadership on special projects and strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Approximately 5 to 8 years of progressive accounting experience.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting.
• Demonstrated experience with month-end close, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
• Experience with fixed assets, depreciation, and capitalization accounting.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with ERP systems.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work onsite in Newton, New Jersey.

Preferred Qualifications

CPA, active CPA candidate, or MS in Accounting; public accounting experience; NetSuite experience; telecommunications, construction, infrastructure, utilities, or other capital-intensive industry experience; construction-in-progress accounting; external audit experience; and exposure to financial systems implementation or process automation.

Compensation

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $110,000 to $140,000 annually. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, capabilities, and overall fit.
