Job summary

AKRF is seeking a detail-oriented Assistant Controller to lead accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls under the Controller, with increasing leadership responsibility and a clear path to the Controller position.

In this ACEC-focused engineering consulting environment, you'll drive process improvements, support audits, manage month-end closes, and collaborate with project teams on budgeting and job costing.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 10+ years progressive accounting experience.
  • At least 3 years in senior accounting or Assistant Controller.
  • Experience in architecture/engineering/environmental consulting; ACEC background preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of project-based accounting, FAR, and indirect cost rate calculations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting operations including billing, A/R, A/P, GL, payroll, cost accounting, and revenue recognition.
  • Lead month-end and year-end close with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Ensure compliance with FAR, GAAP, and other regulatory frameworks.
  • Support internal and external audits; serve as main auditor liaison.
  • Assist Controller and CFO with financial strategy, risk management, and long-term planning.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reporting for executives and Board.
  • Supervise and develop accounting staff; foster high-performance culture.
  • Collaborate with project managers on budget forecasting, job costing, profitability analysis.
  • Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Manage indirect cost rates and prepare overhead rate submissions to state/local agencies.
  • Partner with HR and operations on payroll, benefits, and tax compliance.

Job Responsibilities
  • Assist in overseeing accounting operations including billing, A/R, A/P, GL, payroll, cost accounting, and revenue recognition
  • Lead the month-end and year-end close process with accuracy and timeliness
  • Ensure compliance with FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulation), GAAP, and other regulatory frameworks
  • Support internal and external financial audits and serve as a key point of contact with auditors
  • Support the Controller and CFO with financial strategy, risk management, and long-term planning
  • Assist in preparing accurate and timely financial reporting for the executive team and Board
  • Support the supervision and development of accounting staff; contribute to a high-performance, accountable team culture
  • Collaborate with project managers and leadership on budget forecasting, job costing, and profitability analysis
  • Maintain and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Manage indirect cost rates and prepare overhead rate submissions to various State and Local agencies.
  • Partner with HR and operations on payroll, benefits, and tax compliance matters
Essential Requirements
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum of 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a senior accounting or assistant controller capacity
  • Prior experience in the architecture, engineering, or environmental consulting industry; ACEC-member firm background highly preferred
  • Deep knowledge of project-based accounting, FAR, and indirect cost rate calculations
Compensation

Compensation will range from $150K to $175K and commensurate with experience.
