Job summary

Mungo Homes in Irmo, SC seeks an Assistant Controller to support the Vice President & Controller in managing the accounting function and ensuring timely financial reporting.

The role leads monthly close, reconciliations, job cost oversight, and financial analysis across multiple divisions, while guiding staff and maintaining strong internal controls in line with GAAP.

Qualifications

  • Strong GAAP knowledge and financial reporting expertise.
  • Experience leading close processes and supervising accounting staff.
  • Exposure to multi-entity accounting environments preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Analyze balance sheet and income statement accounts for accuracy.
  • Prepare monthly reporting packages and submissions to corporate.
  • Review transactions for proper accounting treatment.
  • Maintain and strengthen accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Support audits and tax-related requests; ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Assist in workload prioritization and departmental projects.
  • Provide guidance and training to staff accountants and personnel.
  • Identify opportunities to automate and streamline accounting processes.

Job description

Mungo Homes has an opening for an Assistant Controller in our Corporate Office in Irmo, SC!

This position supports the Vice President & Controller in the management of the accounting function and assists in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting. This position plays a key leadership role in the monthly close process, account reconciliations, job cost accounting oversight, financial analysis, and support of accounting team members across multiple divisions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (performs other duties as assigned)
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Analyze balance sheet and income statement accounts for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist in preparing monthly reporting packages and required submissions to corporate/home office.
  • Review transactions and financial data to ensure accurate accounting treatment.
  • Maintain and strengthen accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Support external audits, internal audits, and tax-related requests.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with company policies, GAAP, and regulatory requirements.
  • Review processes and recommend improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Support the Controller in managing the accounting department.
  • Provide guidance and training to staff accountants and accounting personnel.
  • Assist with workload prioritization and departmental projects.
  • Serve as a resource for divisional accounting questions and issue resolution.
  • Identify opportunities to automate and streamline accounting processes.
  • Participate in accounting system implementations, upgrades, and integrations.
  • Develop and maintain reporting tools to improve visibility and decision-making.
  • Assist with special projects, acquisitions, integrations, and process improvement initiatives.

Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • 5-8+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Prior construction, real estate development, or homebuilding industry experience preferred.
  • Experience with multi-entity accounting environments preferred.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
  • Supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
Computer Skills:
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) - Advanced Excel skills
