Overview

Cordoba Corporation is a leading California-based engineering and program/construction management firm. We are seeking an Assistant Construction Manager to lead utility coordination and technical delivery.

Under the general direction of the District's Bond and Capital Projects Manager, assists in the planning, coordination, and oversight of District capital improvement and construction projects; monitors contractor compliance with District standards, Division of the State Architect (DSA) requirements, OSHA/Cal-OSHA regulations, building codes, contract requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local laws; promotes a safe and respectful work environment; coordinates with District departments, contractors, consultants, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders; performs related duties as assigned. This position monitors contractor compliance but does not relieve contractors of their responsibility for maintaining a safe workplace or complying with applicable safety regulations.

Responsibilities

Construction Project Management

  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and monitoring multiple capital improvement and construction projects.
  • Monitor project schedules, budgets, quality, contractor performance, and overall project progress.
  • Participate in project kickoff, pre-construction, progress, coordination, inspection, and closeout meetings.
  • Review contractor submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), schedules, payment applications, substitution requests, and change orders.
  • Review existing conditions, sites, buildings, systems, utilities, and field conditions to identify potential conflicts and support the planning and execution of new, renovation and modernization projects.
  • Conduct regular field observations to monitor construction activities, workforce levels, schedule progress, weather impacts, and site conditions.
  • Verify contractor-reported project completion percentages for payment applications.
  • Monitor material deliveries and assist with project closeout activities, including punch lists, commissioning, warranties, record drawings, and operations manuals.

Construction Safety and Compliance

  • Promote and maintain a safe, respectful, and compliant construction environment.
  • Conduct routine construction site inspections, safety audits, and hazard assessments.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with District safety standards, OSHA, Cal-OSHA, DSA requirements, contract specifications, and applicable regulations.
  • Verify proper implementation of safety programs, including personal protective equipment (PPE), fall protection, scaffolding, excavation safety, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, crane operations, lifting activities, and rigging practices.
  • Identify unsafe conditions or practices and monitor corrective actions.
  • Review construction traffic control, pedestrian access, site security, emergency preparedness, fire prevention, and campus safety measures.
  • Assist reviewing Construction Alerts that provide construction project safety information to the campus community.

Risk Management and Environmental Compliance

  • Conduct risk assessments prior to construction activities.
  • Confirm contractor compliance with applicable building codes, ADA accessibility requirements, fire and life safety codes, environmental regulations, and District standards.
  • Attend regulatory inspections and coordinate with inspectors, testing agencies, consultants, and public agencies.
  • Assist in monitoring of environmental health and safety practices, including dust, noise, silica, hazardous materials, waste management, erosion control, housekeeping, indoor air quality, asbestos, lead, and mold activities, as applicable.

Incident Response and Documentation

  • Assist in investigating accidents, injuries, near misses, property damage, theft, vandalism, and safety concerns.
  • Review incident reports, identify root causes, and monitor corrective and preventive actions.
  • Coordinate emergency response activities with District departments, contractors, consultants, and emergency responders, as needed.
  • Review contractor safety documentation, OSHA logs, project reports, safety metrics, inspection findings, and corrective action reports.

Training and Continuous Improvement

  • Assist with safety orientations, emergency drills, and construction safety training.
  • Communicate District safety requirements, project updates, and regulatory changes to project teams.
  • Promote a positive safety and respectful culture through communication, collaboration, and leadership.
  • Participate in lessons‑learned reviews and recommend improvements to construction management practices, District standards, and safety procedures.
Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE OF

  • Principles and practices of construction management and project administration.
  • Construction methods, materials, scheduling, and quality assurance.
  • OSHA, Cal-OSHA, DSA requirements, and applicable building, fire, accessibility, and safety codes.
  • Construction safety principles, hazard recognition, accident prevention, and risk management.
  • Environmental health and safety practices applicable to construction projects.
  • Contract administration, construction documentation, and project reporting.
  • Office software and project management applications.
  • Effective oral and written communication techniques.

ABILITY TO (Optional)

  • Coordinate multiple construction projects simultaneously.
  • Monitor contractor performance and compliance with contract requirements.
  • Identify construction and workplace safety hazards and recommend corrective action.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, schedules, and technical documents.
  • Communicate effectively and maintain productive working relationships with District staff, contractors, consultants, regulatory agencies, and the public.
  • Promote a collaborative, respectful, and safety‑focused work environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in construction management or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of related experience (or equivalent working knowledge / experience).
  • Ability to lead meetings, communicate directly with owners and project stakeholders, inspectors, contractors, and architects.
  • Ability to learn, and hopefully master, what it means to be a project leader and take responsibility for outcomes.
  • Excellent communication skills; interpersonal, written and verbal.
  • Strong detail orientation and time management skills.

Salary Range: $120,000-$140,000

Location: Long Beach, CA
