The Westchester County Department of Health is actively recruiting for an Assistant Commissioner of Health (Environmental Quality).
Under general direction of the Deputy Commissioner of Health, the successful candidate directs the Bureau of Environmental Quality of the Department of Health. Responsibilities include planning, developing, supervising, executing and administering the Environmental Quality programs, which include engineering services related to water supply, water pollution control, solid wastes, air quality, land development, swimming pools, radiological health and general sanitation programs, and which are primarily concerned with implementation of the County and State Sanitary Codes and the NY State Public Health Law and NY State Environmental Conservation Law through enforcement and education.
Under the powers granted by the NY State Health Department and NY State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Assistant Commissioner serves as the department’s primary local public health engineer, who is authorized to act as their agent in approving the engineering plans issued by the Bureau of Environmental Quality, and is responsible for the engineering management of all approvals of the various environmental quality programs of the bureau. Supervision is exercised over a substantial number of professional and highly specialized staff of engineers, sanitarians, and technicians, as well as clerical personnel. Does related work as required. Examples of work include, but are not limited to:
REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid license and current registration to practice as a Professional Engineer issued by NY State and either: (a) a Master's degree in public health engineering, sanitary engineering, environmental engineering or closely related field; and nine years of sanitary or public health engineering experience (pre- or post-licensure), six years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or (b) a Master's degree in chemical or civil engineering, with major emphasis in sanitary, environmental or public health engineering and nine years of experience (pre- or post-licensure) as stated in (a), including the six years of supervisory experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possess and maintain a valid NY State driver’s license while in the title.
