REPORTS TO: Athletic Director

FLSA STATUS/CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

SUPERVISORY DUTIES: none

SUMMARY

Position is responsible for coaching student-athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition. The position motivates student-athletes to develop an appreciation of the sport.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Coach and instruct players individually or in groups regarding rules, sportsmanship, equipment, and fundamental skills/techniques of the sport.
  • Observe players during competition and practice to determine needs for individual or team improvement.
  • Hold organizational meetings for team prospects and encourage potential athletes to participate.
  • Assess players’ skills and assign team positions.
  • Develop a regular practice schedule and organize practice time to provide individual and team development.
  • Work with the athletics director to schedule facilities for practices and competition.
  • Assign duties to an assistant coach as necessary.
  • Determine game strategy based on the team's capabilities.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior and provide proper supervision of athletes at all times.
  • Monitor academic performance of team members to ensure eligibility requirements are met and encourage high academic standard.
  • Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury.
  • Conference with parents/guardians as necessary regarding athletic performance of their student.
  • Follow state, regional, and district regulations governing the athletic program.
  • Model sportsmanship-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct toward players, officials, and spectators.
  • Follow procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
  • Maintain required or related records.
  • Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Provide the principal and members of the squad with a copy of the rules that govern practice, game, and travel.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of applicable rules, strategy, and skillsets required for success.
  • Ability to teach/instruct fundamentals of the sport.
  • Ability to work effectively with students and staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents, and community members.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures, and Board policies.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
  • A minimum of 1-year coaching experience.
  • Teaching Certificate preferred.
  • Criminal justice/Fingerprint clearance.
  • Maintain requirements for access to Fort Huachuca.

Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that meets minimum requirements.

COMPUTER PROFICIENCY

Demonstrated general proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
